this post reminds me of Alva Oklahoma where part of may family is from. there, the high school football field is next to the cemetery. if anyone is visiting the cemetery for the last time (taking up residence), the team kneels. the cemetery there is kind of unique.  there is potter section, unnamed criminal section, a series of headstone styles that predate headstones, ie they are sort of 3-dimensional figures of things important to people.  one other thing of reverence in Alva is that the fairgrounds used to be a german officers prisoner of war camp. my aunt told me that the prisoners used to come back and visit with the guards on some basis they thought so much of how they were treated after the war.  i think there is still some guard tower there.
