Good Show I thought!  Sounds alot like the technique Knabe always describes on here!  Gonna have to go back and check out some of the old halter breaking threads!  We get them in a small pen like he showed but tie them up too quickly!  Good instruction for my boys to see!

I watched that particular episode two years ago and the first five minutes where he talks about not putting the halter on until you've got the calf calm has made a world of difference.

yup.

he's pretty good.  the small pen, small calf is an asset.  notice when the calf stops, twitches his ears forward and thinks about something his tail stops twitching.  one of the better things i like is he doesn't care what side he is on.

key.  once that calf stops moving or doesn't move far.....scratch him with the halter, just like the stick. it doesn't bother him that the calf moves.  he pretends like he's still.  see him go with the calf with the halter on the hip and keep rubbing?  calves need a safe spot when you do this.

i can guarantee you i have seen calves jump out of pens like that.

one thing i do different is use the other end of the rope, loop it over, pull a tad, then drop.  so i'm a little slower.  rest is similar.  i hold and let the calf release a little more on the lead with his head.

you can't imagine how much better it is with the double length rope.

notice he said, 30-45 minutes to take a step.  he got caught trying to hurrying things a little getting caught behind the feeder.

"when he steps, i let off".  everything is a variation from there.  there is absolutely no reason you can't be beside your calf to lead them or for that matter, anywhere you want to be without pulling when you are done.
