Semen collection

Wanted information on semen collection. I bought a new bull and if he turns out like I think he will I want to get some of him in the tank for peace of mind. I am located in South East Ohio. Is Great Lakes the closest or only place I can get this done. Any input would be appreciated. I saw an advertisement in the Farm and Dairy about it, but I know some of the folks on here have info on this.

  Just pick up the phone and ask about it. Most studs have certain days for jumping bulls for custom collection. Good way to insure your bull in a way.

That was my thinking. I wander if any come to you or if they all require you to come to them. Thanks for the advice I will make some calls.

Both Hawkeye & Hawkeye West will come to your place, but you will pay more of coarse. Most studs will work with you as far as walk ins are concerned. You may get to take your bull back home with you or you may choose to leave your bull at the stud. You will not know right away whether or not your bull will freeze and pass the thaw test so that is something that you may want to ask B4 you go in case you want to leave the bull. This time of the year it is not always possible to leave your bull B/C of lack of pens. A couple of jumps can very as afar as to many straws from 50 to 4, 500 units. 4to 500 hundred units is extremely high with 100 to 200 being more realistic.

There used to be a guy named Freeman Fry of Galaxie Genetics in Hilliard that would collect bulls @ Chan Phillips' place in Maysville, KY once a week.  You haul them in and take them home same day.  Not sure if he is still doing it, or if he is even still in business, but it might be worth a shot.  Did a google search, and this is the # I found for Galaxie Genetics.  614-777-9550

Found a place called Zimmermans out of PA. They will come to the farm so I am going to give them a call.

I would recommend Great Lakes Sire Service. They have collected two of my AI bulls and will soon collect another. They have a nice new facility that is clean and safe. Easy to work with too.
