I just ordered some semen and thought they were kinda high on the shipping. It is coming from a 1000 miles away and there is six straws. I was wondering what everyones experiences are with shipping semen this far(price wise) and what they were charged for it. Thanks!!!

Mine came from TX to IN 95$. Ouch was my first thought.

A little high, but not outrageous.    Coast to coast shipping is typically $130 give or take.

I was awaiting for some semen to arrive for a flush, and I was told it had been shipped from the US to Canada. I started to set up  a couple donors thinking that the semen would be here in plenty of time to breed the donors. The semen got hung up with Customs and also had to wait for a Federal Vet to clear it and we got down to 24 hours from when the donors were to be bred. I finally got word that the semen was released from Customs, but the only problem was that it was sitting in an AI stud, 2200 miles from the transplant center where the cows were being flushed. I called Fedex and asked if they had any over night service from Toronto to Calgary. They told me that it would cost me $110 ( Canadian funds) and that they would pick it up and deliver it to the transplant center, about 40 miles north of Calgary. I really had my doubts that this could possibly ever work, so i had a Plan B in place. The semen was picked up in Ontario at 4 PM at the stud which is an hour drive from the Toronto . At 10:15 AM the following morning, the transplant center called and told me the semen had been delivered there. I was simply amazed. 2200 miles plus pick up and delivery at either end for $110 was very reasonable. Sometimes the system does work!!

Over the last few years, as fuel prices went up, shipping companies like FedEx and UPS raised their rates regularly "to keep up with fuel prices"... Funny thing is, I never noticed those rates going down when fuel prices went down, and I look for them to go up with rising fuel prices again. And so it goes...

The thing is, it costs just as much to ship 1 straw as it does 200. $75 for 5 straws works out to $15 a straw in shipping, that same $75 for 150 straws is only 50 cents a straw (and there's a good chance the seller might pick up some or all of the shipping costs on a big order).  Look for a distributor near you (some of the big companies will tell you if they have a distributor in your area if you'll just ask) or try to get together with your neighbors and have your orders shipped together.

Costs go up, but your pay at work doesnt!!! Guess it's a one way economy. ;)

Considering the fact that our courier and shipping companies give you the opportunity to use any semen from any bull you ever wanted to use in your herd.... it is still cheap! In this day and age, the only thing that is cheap is what we produce.... food.
