semen tank and semen question
« on: December 09, 2015, 07:09:00 PM »
Good evening to everyone. I would like to ask a question and maybe it is not a good question but I am still learning about certain things. My question is about the semen tank and the semen that is stored in it.  I bought a tank and it had semen in it. I have a paper with what I thought was the inventory but I think it is wrong.  I know the person very well who I purchased it from and I know the tank has always been serviced and never been low.

My question is how long can I have a straw of semen out in the air to check and see for sure what it is and how many there is? If I would do this for only a couple seconds and then put it back down in nitrogen would I be ok and not hurt the semen.  If it would hurt the semen how can I check all of this?

Thanks for any information that anyone can share.

You should be ok for maybe 5 seconds give or take.  If there are multiples of the same bull, put the straw you inspect in another cane if possible,  and use that straw in an emergency, in a cow in a marginal heat or something,  just don't count on it for a cow in a must get bred situation if you can avoid it.  Have been in your shoes before without a problem but can't make a guarantee.

I wouldn't recommend bringing it out for 5 seconds. If you take it to a bull stud , they can inventory it in a tray while it is under liquid nitrogen.

I agree with doc. A stud would be the best place to view. If not available I would try to make it quick and also try to keep the straw as close to the neck of the tank as possible. Even down in the neck. Just don't drop it. A loose straw in a tank is a bad deal. Every time you touch it you could be hurting quality.
