Wondering if anyone else has had this experience. I got home from work today and went out to do chores and all my cows were laying outside. I usually separate a cow and open heifer for feeding by locking one in the barn. So when I walk outside she walks into the barn. Well this afternoon there was a skunk in the barn and when she walked in she must have made it mad and it sprayed her. My question is...is there anything that can be used to get the smell out of the barn? I have heard of mixing baking soda, peroxide, and dawn dish soap to get the smell out of animals but would it work for the barn?

We had a skunk spray the house once... Sprayed at the dog while he was under the porch and the whole place smelled for about a month or two... We stopped smelling it after being in it for a couple days, but as soon as we'd leave for a couple hours and come back we could still tell it was there. We used scented candles in every room and they were lit as long as somebody was in the house. It was probably 6 months before I stopped smelling it in the towels on a regular basis, even after a year there were times I could've sworn I could smell skunk in the towel I used to dry my face... Good luck to you

Tomato juice and toothpaste worked really well for my dog that got sprayed a while ago.  My wife learned that while working as a vet tech.

Yes, I have heard this too. I just don't know what part of the building you would wash with that?

Febreeze may be worth a shot, and some automatic scent sprayers to at least mask the smell until it dissipates.

Try getting a sprayer and about 2 gallons of white vinegar, wet down all the areas that were sprayed. Had a dog get hit by a skunk the vinegar got rid of the smell on her.It was about 11 at night and we had a gallon of viegar in the barn for the calves so we tried it, it worked. The vinegar smell will linger a few days but still better than skunk.

Did a little more research on vinegar for skunk, it says to mix 1 gallon of water with one cup of dish soap (sounds like a lot of soap to me) in a garden sprayer spray the effected area, scrub with brush, rinse.

I would try just dousing it with vinegar in a sprayer if it is not something you can rinse down.

This is what has worked on my dog.  2 gallons warm water, 1 bottle peroxide, 1 cup baking soda, 2 table spoons of any dish detergent.

It works well. On the cows you may want to rig some sort of sprayer.

I guess I was thinking of using that on the cow.  I guess a person could mix it with water and spray some areas.
