:'(   I'm scared our County Fair is going to get cancelled next week.  My daughter has her steer right were he needs to be and that would be a major disappointment for all of the kids with their animals.

My office in Fort Worth is filled with kids today.  Nobody has anyplace to take them.

We sold some steers to a couple of guys down in Laredo.  My wife isn't real thrilled with me having to deliver them this weekend.

Chambero, funny you mentioned downtown FW.  I live in Palo Pinto, 60 miles west and work in downtown FW at the courthouse.  Have a good friend who's the CEA in Decatur and he and I have sold some calves together.  Have to drive a little farther sometime when I go to his house and come meet you and see your cattle.  Did you sell the Angus steer you had listed a while back?

I don't know.  They were coming up to Stephenville for a land judging contest last week and just came up and looked and bought three and made it worth my while to deliver them (we're actually meeting halfway on Sunday).  Cash would be just fine with me ;).  Glad to get some calves into a different part of the state.

over the last 3 or 4 years South Texas has become a good market, specially for steers in the $1500 to $2500 range.  Have had 3 guys drive up together the last couple of years all the way from S. Tx, always looking for a $1500 steer, and they will buy 3 or 4 at that price, don't have to be haired up, just good calves with some muscle.  Their shows are slick and after all of the majors.  Two of the guys don't even mess with the majors here in Texas with their kids because their county show pays so good.  A friend has sold 5 or 6 herefords per year to South Texas.  He has to deliver and, yes, paid in cash - I love it when that happens.

Being from South Texas, we tend to differentiate between The Valley and South Texas because they're very different markets.  The Valley tends to be everything within 50 or so miles of the border and they always pay in cash.  I wouldn't make a blanket statement like that but I've never seen a Valley buyer pay with a check or heard of one that did.  They'll buy $5k heifers and send them to the local auction barn after they're done showing.

BTW, on the original subject, I haven't heard of swine flu down there but you'll be driving through the area it first showed up just North of San Antonio.

Things are going to get a whole lot worse in Texas before it gets better.  We kept our daughter home from school today, and plan on keeping her home thru next week.  Several other families have done the same thing even though our school district has not suspended classes yet, I figure they will within the next few days.  There have been several school districts around us that have already canceled school through next week.

I think the UIL, the governing body of all school extracurriculalar activities, made a bold move by postponing all sports and academic competitions until at least May 11th.

For all of you that don't know.  Fort Worth ISD is made up of 140 schools and 80,000 students.  That's just one school district.
Winning isn't everything, but you have to want it.

Laredo's LIFE show has been pretty competitive slick show. Good cattle & Good judges. The Valley show are the same. The Valley shows (RGVLS & surrounding counties) have all made it a point to bring good judges to evaluate the livestock and work with the exhibitiors. In my opinion, they have done a super job of bringing fair, impartial, and knowledgeable judges down. Of course, I am sure their are some people who pay for cattle with checks who are from south Texas or even the RGV. I am sure some people have yet to encounter any of them.

Swine flu name  needs to change though...too many people follow the media frenzy and already you have people boycotting pork products....it is too bad people jump to conclusions and do not make sound choices....I will follow the precautions set forth by the CDC but their are some people who are blowing this thing way out of prportion....no need to be alarmed just be cautious.

Those kids' parents probably have good-paying jobs, that's why.
