Okay so I have a black simmi cow that i want to breed for her to have a blue roan calf. Is there a certain color pattern (white, road, solid, red and white) bull that has a more likely chance to throw a blue roan calf? Common sense would tell me that the white colored bull would more readily produce a blue roan. However, I am not a shorthorn breeder so I don't really now. Also if you have any suggestions for bulls they would be appreciated. I personally like the Phildon Absolutely bull. Thanks

From my understandin a red or rwm animal cant sire a blue pattern on a black as it lacks the roaning. A roan would give 50% chance a whit  shorty to a black would give 100% blue of varyin shades

but there is no actual way of determing a red or rwm cattle's geneotype...  It only takes one hair with the roaning gene to be a 'true roan'....

We bred a solid white cow to Headliner and got a solid red steer.  So with shorthorns they do not always work like theyare supposed too.

Your best bet is to use a white colored SH bull on your cow. If your cow is bigger framed I may would shy away from Sin City. He can make em taller. Good but taller just the same. There are a bunch aof great white SH bulls available to use. Gus, Canasta, Showqueen, SP, Vegas,( watch the TH/PHA),Buddy Love, Wendell Dunn/Dean Kephart, Absolute, Rod & Sue Stream, Chariton,Ia., etc.

Wouldn't you rather make a mating based on characteristics that matter?  Color should be close to last on the list of priorities.

She has always had really good calves, and they have all been jet black. I would like to get another good calf, just this time have some color.
