Water Bag - Odd?
« on: March 13, 2009, 05:17:20 PM »
This morning I had a cow having a calf. When I went out to check there were two feet and a tongue. She needed help so we had to pull. Got it half way out, it got hiplocked and was like that for a half hour or so. There was never any of the slime that there normally is on the calf coming out. Finally got her turned and the cow finally layed down and she came out. Then following the calf, was a HUGE water bag, I have never seen anything like it in my life! Especially after the calf was already born. At first we thought it might be her uterus, but then it broke like a normal water bag. This seemed odd to me?!? Why did the water bag come after the calf? It weighed 148 pounds. Two weeks ago the cow didn't even look bred, I don't know how she had such a big calf in her.

Seems odd to me, too.  I don't recall ever having seen that.  Did the calf make it?

Yes, the heifer calf did make it. It suprised me that she was okay after being stuck for so long. I'll put some pics up sometime. She's a BIG calf!

About 15 years ago I had a cow at calving time passed her placenta. and quit pushing. I kept looking for a calf and finally went in her and there was a fresh dead calf. Seems like to me the first cow to calve eevry year has something wrong. This year had one early. Did o.k.....small....bug eyed just died yesterday...probably 4 weeks old. Hopefully it isn't a bug eyed calf defect of somekind.yikes
People can't believe we have such a big moon for such a small town.

Question did she clean normally following. Sure there wasn't another calf in there, but by now I would think you would have seen that.
what was the breeding on the calf? You have had some whoppers this year. OUCH.

I've seen this several times. Not sure what it is, but as far as I have seen it is nothing to worry about.

AJ- both my Foreplay's are somewhat bug eyed. Hasn't been passed along but who knows!  ;)

We called the vet and he said to make sure there was not another calf, but by the size of this calf there is no way there could be another one. The cow did clean normally shortly after calving. The heifer calf is a red Doctor Who x Heat Seeker. I still look at this calf and cannot believe she is a day old. If I didn't know better, I'd say she was a month old. LOL
