Is it unusual for an open yearling pampered princess of a show heifer to "adopt" and orphan calf to the point she encourages it to try to nurse. Because this little drama is going on in my barn right now. We couldn't just kick this baby out on 15 acres alone so for lack of a better option we put her in the barn with the show heifers. They were all curious and gentle with her but she formed an immediate bond with the big princess. At first we thought it was cute until bigun started to try interfer with bottle feeding, then we noticed the attempted nursing. Now we have them stalled separate, baby is refusing a bottle until she is starving and their constant bawling for each other is upsetting the other heifers. This has turned into a giant cluster and I don't know what to do.

Unfortunately the best option would be get rid of the orphan. Baby calves are always hot this time of year with people looking to put calves on cows that lost one. They bring up to $500 around here. Be careful your princess doesn't start letting other mature heifers start nursing her. I had this start happening one year and had to get rid of several of my favorite heifers, once they calved they were nursing each other instead of raising their calves.
