What do you think of this guy?
« on: October 25, 2013, 08:04:20 PM »
Here is a picture that Gerald Spry of Spry's Shorthorns, Wagga Wagga, Australia sent to me tonight. He is sired by Sprys Ace's Patent J44 who was their top selling bull in last years sale at $46,000. Ace's Patent is sired by Waukaru Patent. What do you think of him?

Gerald Spry considers him to be the best bull they have ever produced. He was born March 22,2013 and had a BW of 84 lbs. He was weaned on August 30th and had a WW of 638 with only his mom and grass. He was 161 days old at weaning which would give him a projected 205 day WW of 812 lbs. IMO, that is pretty good for a calf raised with no creep feed.... anywhere.

I would like to see more pictures from the side, front, and rear.  Also what are his EBVs, pedigree and dam like?  Was he early weaned due to short grass condiions; just asking.  One of the better shorhorn calves to be seen on here.

His rear 1/3 stands out but overall- kinda average IMO. I think you have produced some substantially better bulls, Grant.   Looks like more pedigree hype that actual substance to me.

Define substantial considering lack of contemporary groups.

To me, pedigree is contemporary as well as they help describe a moment in time and a continuum that is easily overlooked by idealism.

To me, he's a decent shorthorn bull who is puts a decent amount of good forward considering his bw. Shorthorns are substantially handicapped on this type due to bw's. If he had a more perfect type, he might weigh more.

I guess his head may be ok from a different angle, so again may be relative, though interesting comment.

stating the obvious, especially compared to mature pictures and a track record is easy.

Grant....he looks very good to me. You can tell from a mile away that's he's a bull calf. I am sure he has exhibited that since birth. Looks a lot like his sire Patent to me. Can't say I am huge fan of Patent progeny but there's no question Patent has helped the breed win respect at the commerical level.
Question....K-Kim Gold Count.....he was huged a fair bit for a year or two and generated some awfully good progeny and show winners also. His daughters make excellent females. Our best here at PL. Homozygous polled also. Why did breeders suddenly stop using him??

K-Kim Gold Count is probably one of the best breeding bulls I ever brought semen into Canada from. I never heard a complaint from anyone who used him and more than a few breeders have told me, that their Gold Count calves were some of the best they ever raised. For some reason, he never caught on in the US like he did here. The semen supply I brought to Canada is completely gone and I sure could have sold more of it. A few years at the Royal Winter Fair, in one of the best shows I have seen in Canada in many years, the only Gold Count offspring that did not win their classes were in classes that other Gold Count calves won.

I also was not a huge Patent fan until his daughters came into production. I have 5 Patent daughters and 4 of them had their first calves this year. I am very impressed with their udder quality and their milking ability, and also am very pleased with how they held their condition while raising very growthy calves. They all calved by themselves and I think everyone of them are going to develop into very very good brood cows. All of them had very good calves.

I just returned from a marathon 2200 mile trip, in 3 days, to the US where I picked up a new stock trailer and then picked up Patent's mother and a set of ET calves I had at a cooperator herd in Minnesota. Patent's mom looks amazing out on pasture after the trip, and I am pretty excited to try a variety of different sires on her.
BTW, I normally find better weather when I head south and east, but this trip it was poorer weather the farther south and east I went. The ground was pretty white through South Dakota and most of Iowa. Barry Jordan had icy roads through Illinois and I met him near the Illinois border. The thermometer on my truck only moved 3 degrees on the entire trip... day or night, until I got close to home and then it rose considerably.

I think he looks like a very good calf. He looks like he has an excellent top and good muscling while appearing very smooth and clean sheathed. You can't really see his head so photos from different angles would be nice. He doesn't wow me like the video of Patent's Ace did although he looks smoother through the shoulder than Ace.! Does his dam have a pedigree or is she SFA? I would like to see a video of him moving and it would be nice to see what the dam looked like.

You got it Pontiac!  That's him.  His dam is from the Roany tribe, and has a pretty interesting pedigree. I am thinking she goes back to the Mandalong Roany females from a few decades ago.

Some of the Mandalong Roany's went back to Lone Pine Roany's. Mandalong Super Flag's dam Mandalong Roany 20th was out of Lone Pine Cherry 1784th. The two Mandalong Roany's that came to Canada were out Wynyard Baize 810th that had Lone Pine on the top side and Silver Pines Wakeful 246th that had crosses of the US bulls Carona Fascination and TPS Coronet Command 10th close up and a US imported bull Lynnwood Blender. I think Lone Pine existed for a long time before and after the Mandalong herd.

I think the Lone Pine herd just dispersed a few years ago. I am thinking this calf's dam was purchased in their dispersal.

JIT, if I remember correctly, the Lone Pine herd was sold in it's entirety to Spry's a year or two ago.

My brother visited them on an Australian trip a number of years ago and we bought the South African semen rights for Spry's All Gold D052 on their recommendation.  We have not regretted it one bit!  He is a maternal brother to Patent's Ace.  From my limited interaction with them, they are great guys and they sold us a winner.

I have heeded your advice and am linebreeding all his female progeny this year and am using a son on the rest of the herd!
