White/colored up functional Shorthorns to downsize
« on: February 24, 2022, 09:19:13 AM »
It'll soon be semen ordering time and this crowd knows Shorthorns pretty well.

Scenario: I have a handful of too-big high percentage Maine cows that I'd like to mate for potential replacement females. I've been using smaller framed, easy calving Angus bulls on these but my customers are clamoring for color. Thinking of putting a Shorthorn on them to inject some color back into the herd. Bull needs to be smaller-framed, from a decent cow family, PHA and TH-free. Don't really care about DS. Not swinging for the show ring fence, but calves need to be marketable to kids and trouble-free as females. I used JPJ back in the day and have considered him again. Thoughts or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

When I think of all the years it took to remove the white socks from Maines.......
It's all about the kids.

Hes probably close to  2 years old and the calf was around 8 months in that picture .And now that hes 11 months or close he will not look the same. There is a reason the calf brought $34000 at that age at the POO  POO Congress "Show?" Justin Taylor of Seven Ts bought half- THEY RUN CATTLE PRETTY HARD AND ARE ONE OF THE PIONEER SHORTHORN BREEDERS IN THE COUNTRY .. I can say hes way more of a showy sound animal without the sloppy wide  front. Maybe its the straw, but the old bull  looks heavy in the front and it doesn"t blend in starting behind his shoulder on back through his mid section to rear . JMO-You don"t have to agree. The calf most likely will remain  wider made past his shoulder on  and already is WAY more proportional from front to  rear. The calfs hip structure is as good as any bull i've seen Sorry:that big bull is somewhat short hipped. And thick to me means the combo of lower third, hip structure-pin placement top,and width from the rear.I haven't seen the old bull from behind so I cant call him thick or not today Remains to be seen on the calf what he looks like full grown. To me these are apples and oranges-two entirely different types and ages.Ive seen the calf's :maternal sibs, dam, and grand dam.And from behind wet and fitted. I've also seen them grown up. As working bulls and females. They live in basically commercial conditions. The calf was not  force fed "hard hot grain".Compton feeds every thing a combo of hi roughage. So:  Compton's cattle are actually fed  quite similar to how a lot of the Canadian cattle are developed. I haven't seen the: BW, weaning ,and yearlings on the old bull. I doubt he weighed what this calf has. And don't tell me looking at his front and neck:that the old bull was never  fed.  Claiming the hair cliche doesn't jive with the real numbers on the calf. And it makes NO SENSE to spend $3-4000 to display a calf without fitting them.  O0

BW?  Id say the real deal commercial  Canadian breeding should work  on Maines. The Maines may need :bodied down ,depth of rib.easier calving body shape (for lack of better description) front to rear and softened up. The Maines may  have: the lower one third, base width,  muscle, feet and bone, and real performance alot of Shorthorns are sorely lacking.   O0

80lb bw.  Finishing up his 3rd calf crop here, havent pulled a calf one.    Still reach for my kimber when I think how previous calving issues were blamed on my cows.

This bull Editor is the king when it comes to downsizing while maintaining type.   He was low 4 frame as a 2yr old after being fed very well.  Hell knock at least a frame score off my 4 frame cows and some cows hes downsized even too much for me but thats bc my cows are already where I want them frame wise.   Over some 6-7+ frame cows youd be hard pressed to find a bull that will bring them back down to where you can afford to feed them any better than Editor will.  Actual rea nearly 14 at 1000lbs so built right with some capacity, not just a tub of guts.

So hes smaller than a Jazz-haf a score or close  smaller than the sire group from Byland in the sale Cant remember which bull they were  sired by, But there were 4-5 of them: maybe all in the 4.5 or so frame areas. Yearling wts: maybe 1030-1050.-Not exact dont have stats in front of me. (THEY GET FED HARD-THEY WILL NOT STAND TEXAS OKLAHOMA OR KANSAS VERY WELL) How big do the steers dress on this bull? O0
