yellow roans, diluter gene
« on: September 28, 2014, 08:15:44 AM »
If anyone has pictures of yellow roans would you please post a few? I am thinking of crossing with a dun Galloway bull and wonder what the diluter gene will do to that deep Shorthorn red and roan. I guess the dun could also carry a black gene.. I'm confident in the phenotype,  just curious about the colors.

Are duns black or red?  Or either?

Diluted black, as far as I know- like a Smokey. But there would be a golden shave, I guess. Its dull brownish gray.

Here are some yellow roans from crossing shorthorn bulls on charolais cows.

We have 2 very good Shorthorn Plus heifers in the Swing the Gate sale that are similar in color to the heifer calf at side of the cow in the picture you posted.  Not as much white, but the gold is nearly the same.  The dams are Simmental X Shorthorn cows.  We also had some very good yellow roan Char X Shorthorn calves years ago when the neighbor's bull visited our place.  I'll try to find a photo.  Those Simmental X Shorthorn females are tremendous cows.
