Kentucky Bluegrass Invitational Open Steer & Heifer Show
« on: April 13, 2010, 04:37:11 PM »
To be held in Murray, KY  and hosted by Murray State University Block & Bridle.  April 22-24.  I don't know all the details, but they do have a Facebook page and I think there is info on the MSU website.  Here's what I do know:  Cattle must arrive on the 22nd - Showmanship is at 8 a.m. the 23rd and the steer show follows. - heifers show the 24th @ 10 a.m. - early entry deadline was April 1, but still accepting entries.

I stopped by the show this morning to watch a little while.  Numbers are low, but the quality is good overall.  Only 5 steers there.  I'd like to see this show succeed, but they are in a bad location.  There aren't many show cattle in Western Kentucky.  I expected more cattle from Tennessee and maybe Illinois though.  Hopefully they'll have it again next year and the people that showed this year will return and bring some more with them.  Jackpots for supreme champion steer & heifer is $400.  Reserve is $200 for both shows.

They are still accepting entries for the heifer show today.  It is tomorrow at 10 a.m.  Call Becky@ 618-806-4650 or John @ 270-350-1149 for more info.

I live in central ky and didn't know anything bout the show until last night. There was a Kentucky Dept. of Ag. show in Meade County today also, I would say that hurt attendance alot. i was at the Meade county show, but would have been interested in the jackpot show if it was on a different weekend or i had known about it

I wondered how well they advertised the show.  The kids in my county knew about it, but we're just to the south of Murray and our extension agent is a Murray State grad.  That said, I think only 3-4 kids (out of approx. 45 that show steers) from my county went and they only took heifers.  The show had several sponsors so hopefully they didn't lose much money and that won't stop them from having it again next year.

We are from southern il and would have loved to have attended, but spring farming started earlier this year.  It was a bad time for us.  I do hope they have it again.  June would be much better, but I realize the college kids are gone.

I stopped by Southern States today (they were the major show sponsor) and their feed salesman said the show ended up with around 70 head, but only 7 steers.  They are planning to have it next year on April 30th, with everything showing on one day.  They are in the process of starting a website dedicated to the show and they are going to do a little more advertising next year.  This year was apparently limited mostly to sending out info to Kentucky & Tennessee extension agents.  Word is the show was a hit with the people that did make it, so they hope it will grow next year.

I just hope they dont have it the same day as a KDA show because I think a lot of kids in Kentucky would pick the KDA show simply because of points.
