We are changing our herd away from Shorthorn

Boy, wouldn't that be a slap in the face to the CAB program. Certified angus beef without any angus in it.

We are changing our herd away from Shorthorn

I'm not necessarily advocating for or against black shorthorns, just stating the fact that there are a lot of commercial cattlemen that are brainwashed into the black cattle craze that would never consider trying a shorthorn, but would if you could offer them a black shorthorn. A lot of these...

We are changing our herd away from Shorthorn

There are many ways to look at the idea of "leaving money on the table". If you have red calves, you are going to get less than if you have black. If you take a load of ten and there is one red one there is going to be a big difference. If you show up with a load of red ones it's maybe not as...

We are changing our herd away from Shorthorn

Cattle buyers will use any excuse they can to give you less money. The two biggest things that shorthorns have going against them are Holsteins and Longhorns. A roan shorthorn "might be" a longhorn. A red calf with white spots "might be" part Holstein. I know that anyone who has been around...

We are changing our herd away from Shorthorn

If someone was to make some shorthorns that were 15/16ths high quality shorthorn with solid black hides, I think they would sell pretty well to the commercial cattlemen. Most people that have the resources in shorthorn genetics to do that are already doing pretty well selling fluffy club calves...

We are changing our herd away from Shorthorn

I was worried about the huge cow killing calves that shorthorns are known for. My shorthorn bull is running a 68 pound average birth weight on my commercial cows. Heaviest one so far out of ten has been 85 pounds. My calf jack is collecting dust and I hope it stays that way. The last time I used...

    Collecting Data

I have a Shorthorn bull on some commercial cows. He is throwing some real easy calves, so far averaging in the high sixties on birth weight. Is there any way to report this data to the shorthorn association? I am planning on registering a couple heifers as shorthorn plus out of my commercial...

    Horned Genetics

The African horn gene does exist in Zebu derived cattle (Brahma) and in Texas Longhorns, as well as some of the Sanga type cattle. It is dominant to both the polled gene (PP) and the recessive horned gene (pp). It can really throw a wrench in the genetic equation.

We are changing our herd away from Shorthorn

I'm a commercial guy. Ran Herefords for years, buy Hereford bull keep a bunch of heifers for about two years, ditch the Hereford and breed to a black bull for about four years and only keep select heifers out of him. I decided to go shorthorn, from what I can see the Hereford is re-inventing...

    Moderate BW bulls???

I'm a commercial guy that came to the Shorthorn breed for maternal traits. I will say that it is all in the cow herd. Somewhere in the midst of all of the quest for low birth weights I think that some people are figuring out that there is a direct link between the 50 pound birth weight and the...

    New Guy

Hi, I'm new here. My google searches on Shorthorn bloodlines kept leading me here so I finally decided I would join. Lot's to learn here. I'm just a small time commercial cattlemen, multigenerational, not much on the show scene, but my wife did some 4-H back in the day. I was drawn to the...
