    Feed question

They can't legally sell feed without a guaranteed analysis so they must have one somewhere.

    Preferred Head Chute?

I still love our Priefert Chute that my Granddad bought in the 60's.  We added a brisket bar and it does everything the fancy ones do.  Priefert is still the best buy for your money of the big brands if that's a consideration for you.

    show steer will not lead

I agree with those that say to go slow and reward small steps.  There is no telling how many calves have been ruined with calves and tractors because it wasn't done right.  Yes, it can work, but it's an admission that you don't know what you're doing frankly.  If you start with a step, you'll...

    Feeding bulls

With all of our show cattle we try to keep them with just a little cover at any given time.  If they are able to deposit just a small amount of fat, they have extra energy left over and are growing to the top of their genetic potential.  This being said, my heifers are never as fat as the others...

    B-12 shots?

If you see results that's good, but rumen bugs should produce more than enough of all of the B vitamins if the rumen is functioning at all.  If you still need him to gain fast to meet your weight goal then you could increase the nutrient density of his feed to keep him growing.  Also, we have...

    Steering a bull calf...

we've never had issues cutting them at that age, even up to 800 pounds, and they heal in a week as opposed to a month with a bander.  They also bleed less if you can throw him rather than cut him standing in a chute.  I'm not sure why but in the thousands of calves we've worked that is the trend

    Clover Hay??

I would almost guarantee you that high protein is the cause.  You're feeding a legume hay, which is naturally higher in protein, and high protein causes looser stools.  As long as it isn't absolutely watery and the cows don't look gutted you have nothing to worry about.  If you want to add other...

    any opinions welcome

If it wasn't a neural defect I would say it looks like there was something wrong with the development/relaxation of his tendons/ligaments.  Could you tell if he was born alive?  Environmentally it could be a deficiency, a toxin, or an injury to the cow at an early stage of pregnancy.

    $600,000 world record Hereford

Wouldn't the 1/2 interest for 301k in the 80's technically still be the highest paid, as that would value him at 602k?  And i doubt that number was adjusted for inflation as well.  I see the claim as true from an absolute dollars paid standpoint but as far as value, wouldn't it be the bull from...

    White Jazz

Question because I am not well versed in shorthorn color genetics:  Would he throw white calves on Charolais cows?  I assume on simangus cows they would be roan, black, or white?

    Awards at County Fair

If you want to still give "money" then give them checks from the county Farm Bureau, Cattlemen's Association, or 4H office and just route the funds through them.  If you want to give things then buckles, plaques, trophies, and banners are the classic award, with the other mentioned earlier as...

    Cotton seed hulls

We've been fighting it in the southeast for years.  We've finally got a few more herbicides that work on it now at least.  I would suggest beet pulp or really any other high fiber feedstuff would do.  Soyhulls may also be another option depending on availability

Charolais heifer- is she worth hauling around?

Take her everywhere you can and show her as a market when there aren't enough Chars to make a show.  She'll do well for you in either ring.  She looks like the type that will soften and mellow and "broody up" the longer you feed her.  I would say that in proportion to her flank depth, she might...

What to breed Firewater daughters to?

I've had great luck with Grid Maker and a son, EC No Doubt on FW heifers.  They come small, grow fast, and are as stout and soggy as you could want one. They both also have good numbers behind them so the calves market well to show calf buyers and seedstock producers.
