Probably not going to make weight

He went off ALL feed for two days including hay.  In the previous thread I said that he started leaving some of his ration then at one point only eating 1/2 until he was not eating at all......  That took over 2 weeks to happen, he lost weight during that time.  So, NO, he was not actually...

Probably not going to make weight

Yes, I agree.  Would love to have purchased a calf outside the ranch, but it was a gift to her for her first year :)  Well, one person said I should be able to learn a lot from this and I think that is an understatement ;)

Probably not going to make weight

Update from Feeding a commercial calf to show quality ??? Those that followed the thread know that we were trying to push a commercial calf to take to our county fair.  Well, he ended up getting acidotic from switching feed - albiet we did do it slow.  He became more picky than he was before...

    Can they grow too fast?

Interested to know how the progress is going with your steer.

Feeding a commercial calf to show quality questions ????

Thanks to all who helped me with this situation.  I have learned a great deal and will hopefully be able to teach it to my kiddos!  The steer is back to his spunky self as of May 9 - YAY (clapping)!  I am keeping up on the baking soda as per the vet - 1 tbs per day in a paste.  The steer will...

Feeding a commercial calf to show quality questions ????

Thanks for the suggestions.  Still acting less spunky than his normal self (head and ears up and alert, moves out fine).  Drinking, peeing, pooping is all good.  Doesn't seem in pain.  His pen buddy is doing better at this point, but she is not tagged for fair :( and she is one of the ranch's...

Feeding a commercial calf to show quality questions ????

As advised here and also by Kirk Stierwalt - feed only grass and add more corn and take him off Origin calf enhancer.  First, we got him up to the 22 pounds of feed then started to add corn and take away the Show feed, pretty slowly.  He ate the first several days feedings really well.  I tried...

    Proposed Child Labor Laws

I'm not quite sure how I should take that.  So, I will leave it to you to tell me what you meant by it.  Although, if you are unbelieving in my station, check out the May issue of the Western Horseman (starting on pg 14 then 66).  I have browsed through your past posts and you are quite...

    Proposed Child Labor Laws

WOW, XBAR, you are VERY assuming?  What makes you think that I would throw my child into an unsafe situation - or anyone on here for that matter???  So, your profile says you are 26? When did you start working/learning in the ag industry?  By your comments, it sounds like it must have been after...

    Proposed Child Labor Laws

Thank you for posting this ZNT.  By reading only what you posted it seems that if the law were to be proposed again or pushed now, it would affect my family.  We are not owners, but managers.  So, again only reading what's posted, my kids couldn't set foot outside the yard to "do" anything...

    Proposed Child Labor Laws

You are right Feed Grass, but IMO this can be monitored a little better, say at school when the kids have group counseling (yep, they do that).  Plus the county fairs will be null and void...so on and so forth.  We just have to take action NOW is all.  Most people in the ag industry are old...

    Proposed Child Labor Laws

This country has become way too feminine.  I am not a feminist, can you tell?  I do believe in fair treatment, however.  Let's take a look at schools:  Has anyone noticed that they are mostly run by...females.  A females instinct is to protect (not new info here) - so from a very early age our...
