Thank you so much, everyone! I'll wait until I bring her home from the fair and that will be day 10+ :)

    Lutalyse advice

I did something dumb this morning and I need advice. I have 2 show heifers and a show bull, all 11 months old. I was in a hurry to get a heifer clipped this morning. The bull got in with the other heifer. She wasn't showing any signs of heat so I, like a fool, left him in there and took the...

    Calf born today!

Nice calf, looks like a good one! I had several Uno Mas calves last fall and I love them. Halter breaking 3 of them now.

    High dollar generating cows

I kept my first show heifer for many years as a pet. She never had a calf because she never cycled. The vet said she had a very small reproductive tract. She was a big ol' fat cow. My daughter and my niece and nephew all rode on her back. She was by far the gentlest animal I've ever been around...

Charolais cross cattle with skunk markings

One of my first cows was a yellow 1/2 charolais 1/2 simmental with a skunk stripe. I still have skunk tails pop up in her bloodlines even with a bunch of simmental and angus in the mix. I showed one two years ago and everyone kept asking if she had pinzgauer in her. She was only 1/8 charolais...

    calving ease EPD number question

I also use the Show-Me Select requirements as a guideline when breeding heifers. :) They have each breed listed on their website: http://agebb.missouri.edu/select/prgmreq.htm Scroll down to the Certification section.

    Selling Cattle Across State Lines

I live in Missouri and I have someone from IL buying one of my heifers. What all is required to get the heifer across state lines? I am assuming health papers and a brucellosis shots from a vet. Anything else? I've never sold cattle to someone in a different state before so tell me all you can...

    Heifer scared of small people

Mine used to be afraid of children and strollers a few years ago. Now I have a daughter, a niece, and a nephew. Needless to say, my cattle aren't scared of kids anymore. lol

    What is your Dream Blower?

One with a high, medium, and low settings with a really long hose that doesn't blow beakers. Also, small enough that it could be easily be stored in a show box.

What is the highest percentage of one sex of calves out of a herd bull?

I've had 2 different herd bulls over the past 9 years. I've had about 65% heifers born in that time by those two bulls. Two of those years I only had one bull per year. In 2012 I started AI-ing some of my purebred cows and I am FINALLY getting some good bull calves.  ;D

what does your County Fair give out for awards?

At our fair the youth gets a plaque and a rosette. The open show winner gets a lawn chair that says "champion" on it and a rosette. I like the plaques better because they will last forever and you can put them on display. A lawn chair wears out after a few years and you can't display them...

    3C Sturdy

That's why I started this post. I want calves that won't always place last in a cattle show. I have highly productive cows IMO. I cull strickly if they do not breed back on time (reproduction is a lowly heritable trait). I have tried several different rations to help my show cattle and stuck...

    3C Sturdy

Thanks. I think I will try Grandmaster on my Uno Mas heifers for sure. :) Let me see some pics of those calves when you get them.

    3C Sturdy

I'd like to see some pictures of his calves as well, if anyone has any. :) So, Sturdy would probably work better on the deeper body type of cattle? I have a few cows like that but most of my cattle are probably needing more depth. lol

    3C Sturdy

Thanks! I was thinking about Grandmaster too because he was from Select Sires and they have been helping us out a lot. I didn't know he was calving ease though. I'll be breeding my Uno Mas calves around next year (they're young still). I guess I could use Grandmaster on them. Thank you so much! :)

    3C Sturdy

Thank you. That helps out a lot! :) I am strongly considering using him. I have a few simangus cows but not a whole lot. Most of mine are purebreds.

    3C Sturdy

Thanks! That helps a lot! I think I will get some Fat Butt semen and only use him on old cows. I'll think about Strudy. Thanks again. :)

    3C Sturdy

I was wondering about the simmental bull 3C Sturdy. Has anyone used him on heifers? What do his calves look like? Does he do any good in TAI? I was thinking of using him on some pb simmental heifers and maybe some simangus heifers. I noticed he was old and had pretty accurate EPDs so I figured...

    Uno Mas

I really like them. I had 6 of them born in October. 5 of them look good; one is runty but that was the mama's fault because she has a small bag. They seem to have pretty good muscle, I think. Even the runty one is pretty buff (just small). Here's a pic of a bull calf at 2 months.
