Heifer Show Winners -- "The Look"

We have spent the last 5 years chasing "the look" in heifers and it seems we are always one step behind. We had a breakthrough year in 2015 with a heifer that was super fancy, super feminine, one judge said very ladylike. She had a fair amount of success in class but fell short against the...

    Steer needs weight!!

We are seeing the best gains/condition we have ever had using Hi Pro 12%-5% feed and purina powerfuel. Our area is southeast Texas so it's hot and humid like Florida. No cooler, only fans.

    Red Steer

We had a very nice steer a couple of years ago out of Horn's bull Born Free. He's a red bull sired by Solid Gold. On the char cross cows red might be possible but with the diluter it could be lighter than you want. Our steer was black on a purebred angus cow so black is highly probable on a...

    Red Steer

On the char cross cows I think MAB might give you as good a shot at red as anything, on black cows not so sure. This is a pic of a MAB x char heifer. It's not the red you are looking for but it's a good idea of what this cross makes.

    Red Steer

Very good question!!! We have a red steer sired by Solid Gold but I don't know what's on the dam side. We have a red BIM heifer but her dam is red.

    Show cattle health?

I know your post said show cattle health but in our experience our market broilers often die of congestive heart failure before we reach their end point.

what type of cows to use BIM on?

BIM heifer out of a former american show heifer. The cow is big framed with a huge middle and decent sized feet. He added bone, hair and some flashy looks as well as cleaned up the front a bit.

Slick cattle and haired cattle pix

The best 2 I could find close together in weight. Three weeks apart. Last haired jackpot the first of February and the day he made the sale in San Antonio 3 weeks later.

    Online Sale Steer Size

My son just sold one in San Antoino that was in the low 1200 that was in the first class of limmi if that helps you put it into perspective. But there were only three classes. Some of the breed divisions with higher numbers have different class breaks.

    Steer weight???

Thank you for the feedback. I bought the oats and more beet pulp today to start adjusting his ration. Honestly this is much easier than trying to push one!!!

    weight gain stopped

I had to seek advice on holding one but on pushing one or getting one back to eating I can give a couple of suggestions. Leave off all the stuff you are trying to add and go back to your basic feed ration. You can add some stabilized rice bran. It may not have much time to do them any good but...

    Steer weight???

Im hoping we get enough shrink from the trailer ride and staging. It's a 3 1/2 hour ride and we will be staging all night and moving in the next morning. Not sure how it's going to go, never been to San Antonio before just Houston and Ft Worth. We are wanting to show him around 1380 and it's...

    Steer weight???

Thank you for your advice. Very good plan, I just hope I can get my husband on board with it. We have never had to hold one. The weather here in Texas is crazy and keeping them eating is a full time job. We are always pushing to finish. I started adding beet pulp against my husband wishes...

    Steer weight???

Most recent pics I have when he was still in the 1200lbs range. Edited to add: This isn't about us taking a top prize with this steer. It's about an almost year long project my son has worked his backside off on. To him the prize is the privilege of getting to show for the first time at a major...

    Steer weight???

How do you slow down a steer without burning off finish? Our steer bound for San Antonio weighed in yesterday at a whopping 1433 lbs. The week before we cut him back to 25lbs of grain and increased the beet pulp and precon to 3lbs each. He was eating 34lbs a day with 1 1/2lbs each of precon and...

    Opinions?

Thats a pretty good placing in what sounds like a tough class. Congrats!!! We were hoping to do better too with the heavy bred angus. The junior heifer landed about were we expected. We still had a blast, ate some good food and got to visit with some family that live up there we don't see very...

    Opinions?

How did she do? We got 7th in class 2 and 5th in class 20 of the angus show on Sunday. The judge was tough.
