    Shorthorn Genetic Problems

So since you are such an outstanding leader I await patiently your new registry!  To say that progeny of known carriers should be denied registry is the same thing as dialing back the progress 50 years. What about all the clean cattle that have been created by dirty parents. Those are to be...

    Our 2015 Shorthorn Jr Nationals

BroncoFan you need to be showing dogs then. Few things in life are more subjective than cattle shows. One year at Denver we were 3rd out of 12 in junior show. Next day we were 12-15 in open show. Different judges different views of importance.

    Our 2015 Shorthorn Jr Nationals

BroncoFan, Your in the wrong arena if you think you'll have it figured out to where your always at the top. Except for a few exceptions around the country. I can prolly count them on one hand, everyone will have their day at the bottom. It's impossible to drag cattle that everyone will like...

    Genetic Defects in Shorthorns

A DSH when bred to a clean cow will make a carrier everytime. But will never sire an homozgote.  Also a DSH is not a dead calf like TH and PHA.

Steer show classifications...is it time to change?

I just think that to represent a breed, you should be sired by a bull of that breed. Then when you start a show you can make that a rule.

Thank you. The people participating like it!

Steer show classifications...is it time to change?

Im not claiming they are PBs. Nor is anyone I know. We know they are crossbreds and we tell our kids we are looking for one that fits these visual characteristics.

Steer show classifications...is it time to change?

The numbers show that the program is healthy and growing. How many Midwest state fairs are growing?  So odviously the people participating don't mind the system.  There is actually a lot of consistency due to the fact all shows and jackpots use the same criteria for visual definition of breeds...

Steer show classifications...is it time to change?

There are 1700 exhibitors with steers at Houston this year. Each kid can only bring one steer. That's 3-4 times what the biggest Midwest state fairs have with kids bringing multiple steers.  This is only one of the spring majors at Texas. It seems to me it's working ok?  Can things be tweaked...

Steer show classifications...is it time to change?

I can understand why a PB breeder might be aggravated by the classification system, but it actually takes all the lying out of it. If you read the rules at Texas majors it lists sets of visual characteristics that cattle must meet to be eligible to show in that breed. Nowhere does it say animal...

Steer show classifications...is it time to change?

We might have to agree to disagree but how is it lying when the rules say you have to meet these visual criteria to show as such and such. It doesn't say you have to be a such and such.  It says you have to appear as a such and such. Everyone knows it's part of the game.  The monoply story was...

Steer show classifications...is it time to change?

I'll be honest I think there's less lying involved with the classification system as opposed to papers. I know a shorthorn steer that was out of monopoly that did alot of winning up north that was "papered" as purebred.  With the classification system the judges know and the classifiers know...

We are changing our herd away from Shorthorn

It's not the associations job to create a market. That's your job.  Every breed has it advantages and disadvantages.

Potential genetic defect in Shorthorn cattle

I talked to a geneticist the other day.  He said they're working on markers for close to 50 chromosomal issues. He said no matter how hard you work to eliminate them, you never will. Just have to manage them. Will be the story for the next 100 or so years.

    When is it considered overkill?

Then let the kids and families show the cattle they have. Shake hands say good luck and work your tail off to beat them instead of telling families what they should and should not do with their calves.

    When is it considered overkill?

I understand things happen and things aren't going to go the way sometimes we think they should but that's a great opportunity to teach the kids.  Win humbly lose graciously, maybe. I think it's important to teach the kids that sometimes life happens in ways it shouldn't. Life isn't fair, and...

    When is it considered overkill?

If we are worried about taking one and getting beat wouldn't this same thing apply to the high dollar steer argument?  Soooo we don't take a heifer because she might get beat but, we are complaining because others spend a bunch on steers?  Wouldn't that mean the high dollar steers could get beat...

    When is it considered overkill?

What's the point in having a show heifer if you can't show her?  Every time you take one out you might get beat so?
