    Interesting Article

Interesting comments from the few brave enough to tackle this subject.....I love this site but often feel like I'm the only one who sees what goes on behind the barn!

    Interesting Article

http://issuu.com/nmstockman/docs/nms_nov_2013/99?e=1828006/5582825 November issue of NM Stockman - pages 87 & 98.  Have never met the author but I applaud him for speaking up and thank the magazine for printing the article......this subject has been swept under the rug for far too long.  We...

at the end of the rope

Congratulations to you on the way you're raising your daughter!  She obviously has been taught to think more of others than just herself - this will carry her to success in her life.

    Thanks SP

Good for you!  SP has helped me out more times than I can count.  Glad to hear your calf is doing well.

    Best hair whitener

We had some mostly-white SH heifers last year that we just couldn't get clean & some really helpful Hereford folks at Tri-State told us to mix Sullivan's Bright Lights with joy dish soap - it really did the trick.

    Share your funny/cute livestock photos

Cute idea Larissa - sometimes we all need a smile.  I'll see if I can manage to post a couple.  1.  Had to run get my camera & hoped he wouldn't move before I got back.  2.  Think he's asking momma for attention.

Cowman52 is correct.  Gastro Gard works wonders.

Using mane tail and groom on heifers hair

Good for you for letting your kids learn by doing.  Have to admit that I did chuckle over the gouges - reminded me of the time my youngest grandson, after watching his older brother's lamb get clipped, decided to try it on his own head then had to explain to people why he was running around with...

    My sons heifer

    Maternal instinct taken for granted

We haven't noticed much difference in the maternal instinct between our Red Angus & our Shorthorns.  At our age we prefer them to allow us to weigh & tag the calves without being over protective - but let a stranger or a dog in the vicinity & they are really aggresive to them!  Duncraggan, your...

MONTIE SOULES HIRED AS SHORTHORN EXECUTIVE SECRETARY/CEO

EXACTLY!  We fought the hide color bias for years in the Red Angus due to the propaganda put out by the Blacks and before Reds became 'popular'.  In our experience, the Shorts have been a bit harder to maintain than the Reds but the result on the plate has not been that much different.  And yes...

Week old calf bucked over at knees

This works.  Had a calf a while back the same way, used followed Red's instructions & cleared it right up.

    Help with a crazy steer

We had a steer like that last year - always "on alert" & wary of strangers.  Read on SP about giving 100mg Melatonin daily & tried it - really made a difference for us.  He was still very alert but didn't go postal all the time.

    month old calf problem

We've never had any luck with Micotil.  Long time ago our vet advised us to give Baytril (single dose) along with 2cc of Dex & 1 cc of Banamine - has saved quite a few calves for us.

Gee, one could ask the same question of the Red Angus Association...they've had some really sorry execs in the past.

Thanks for starting this thread, Justin.  We got started showing cattle really late in life and always appreciate any advice!
