A few young breeding bulls we are using-SH

Here’s an updated picture of Guardsman 8G. He is definitely getting a more mature look to him. His first calf crop is looking quite powerful. Hopefully he can see a show this fall. Russ

A few young breeding bulls we are using-SH

The bulk of the bulls we are using this year are home raised yearlings and 2 year olds produced through AI. The first bull is JT Gaurdsman 8G, a Stockman from a Titan 3T female who we used last year as well. He is a bugger to get pictures of when he is in breeding mode which is why the only one...

    old magazines on ebay

I am very fortunate to have many of these magazines from the 40’s and up. An interesting piece I found was a 40 page leather bound book about the bull Browndale Count. I will attach a sampling Russ Poplar Park

    Herd Bull Pictures

Thanks Idalee! They have been very good bulls for us. I don’t think I had ever looked at him on digital beef ASA before. He has a complete pedigree on Digital Beef CSA. Being one of very few 4508 progeny born in Canada I could see how something could be missed. Russ

How do you inseminate with old semen: Amps?

We have had very good luck splitting amps. Our tech’s have always used a syringe and a pipette on ampules. If the semen isn’t rare we do use the whole amp for a cow though. Russ

    Semen inventory

I’m lucky that one of my tanks has a booklet zip tied to it that has its contents. The 40+ year old tank is a mystery every time a canister gets pulled up. It creates interesting “on the fly” changes in AI. Haha. Although I do like the booklet because it can be adjusted/updated as soon as...

Black Noses On Shorthorn Cattle by Dr. Martin Lee

Sidetracking a bit but what makes you say that? There are lots of operations who run on mainly foraging pasture and then bales in the winter other than replacement females who see extra attention for the purpose of growth and first time breeding. Russ

    Soundness of bulls

I am not really involved in the club calf game, a bull I was going to try a few years back was a young money son Renegade Blues but didn’t end up using him. We had great luck years ago with BK Power Plus and Gigalo Joe over purebred Shorthorns. Had and still have some of the original ALI but I...

    Soundness of bulls

Call me crazy but the beef world could use a shot of horned blood. With the shorthorns for years only the best of the best horned animals  have been kept as bulls ( for the most part)  instead of nutted. The horned genetics just seem to have that hoof size, nuts, skeleton, ruggedness and...
