mis-presented - fluke or trend this year?

Right there with you. Last year we didn't call the vet once, and he has been out three times in the last 12 hours. Breech, Leg back and then a prolapsed uterus. Saved them both, but it starts cutting into profits with each call.

    Private Treaty Sales

Haven't had a chance to make it to any private treaty deals yet this fall. I talked to a co-signer from the Cedar Rapids Simmental sale who was pleased. He thought the steers were probably more in demand than the females, which suprised him. I have, however, been keeping a watchful eye on...

    Breeding the Perfect Bull

Figured it wasn't for everyone. Just thought I'd share it for those who needed a read. If you have ever listened to a set of reasons, you stop noticing all the filler to get to the details. Maybe I liked the idea of the article and gave it too much credit, to each their own.

    Breeding the Perfect Bull

A very well written article about breeding cattle,  cloning, and being a cow-calf producer. http://www.smithsonianmag.com/people-places/Breeding-the-Perfect-Bull.html?c=y&page=1

    Blaze simmis for calving ease

I agree with High Voltage. I have seen him in person, and looked through a ton of his calves. They come out tiny with a lot of get up and go, and his weaning weights are pretty great as well. Just purchased a son out of him and Grizz daughter, 50 pound birth weight. 90% of the bulls in the pen...

    Creep feeding replacement heifers

Creep feeding doesn't cause them to have reduced milk, it is the fat. If you are creep feeding a calf that is on a good milking cow, and they get too fat, then it will mess with udder development and cause reduced milk production as a mature cow. I spent an entire semester in a lactation course...

The Official Baby Calves Thread Spring 2010

We have a Sunseeker/Charolais heifer that calved last year, her bag was almost non-existant, and had the wrinkled look that you talked about. She never seemed to get a bigger bag, but the calf seemed to get along just fine and she weaned him at 550 pounds with no creep, he was green but more...

    Collection costs

Curious about the costs of having a bull collected? I am sure that there is a set cost, and a per straw basis. This is a bull that would go up and come home in the same day preferably. We're in Iowa, so I am guessing the logical places are Nichols and Hawkeye, any preferences toward one or the...

OK Planeteers.....Time 2 USE Your Brain AGAIN.........

The problem I see is animal welfare groups seeing us using animals as a billboard. It relates to the airing thread, what is the real purpose of it, and how do you make it sound even slightly okay? My own opinion is to spend more time at the farms showing how these animals are cared for on a...

What is the most calves you have heard of from a single sire?

Similar story to yuppie, we put a yearling Charolais bull in with a mature solid black bull. We figured we'd get a few out of the Char, see what they looked like and go from there the next year. Turns out, Charlie didn't mind the heat of the day, and we had 90% white/smoke calves from that...

    Tagging Cattle

Its amazing all of the different combinations people come up with. All of them seem like they would work well. What has worked best for us, is tagging calves the same as the cow, we find it easier to get a pair in if someone is lagging behind. Heifers get tagged in the left ear, bulls in the...

    Swine Flu. N/C Obvious

As people in the livestock industry, please re-label this as H1N1. It is no longer, and never should have been called the "swine flu." Help our swine friends out, and use the proper name on here, and in everyday conversations.
