    Automatic waterers

I'd say your best bet would be a miraco or ritchie. Both are built to last and are low maintenance. Both are easy to clean when needed, I'd say the Ritchie is a little easier to work on being they have bigger access doors to the valves and such underneath. Being in a barn and not having much...

    Jsar Titan

I have a bull and a heifer outta JSAR Titan and they seem pretty quiet. The bull calf looks to be pretty good, deep in his lower quarter and big topped. Both are out of purebred Shorthorn cows. The heifer has a really cool front end on her (the cow isn't very clean fronted). I like the Titan...

    Food stand still

Biggest thing to remember when changing feeds, is to stretch it out. Their stomach needs time to adjust. 7-10 days at least to get them transitioned over to a new feed. I always make sure to keep probiotics in them when we do feed changes.

    Cow Choking on Placenta

We've never had one choke on it, but I've always made it a point to remove it. There's only a small chance that they choke however in the big picture, its a pretty controllable factor in my opinion.

    Calf problems

Bio-Mos in mineral tubs helps a lot with scours. We've used them 4 years in a row and they have cut down on our scours problems immensely. We've also done the 21 day Corid treatment in the ration. Again, it helped a lot in controlling scours. Hubbard has a 60 lb Brigade stress tub that is the...

    scours

Hyrdalyte or Diaque electrolytes.I like to use Resflor for an antibiotic. If the calf has blood, it may or may not have clostridial scours and that you need to treat with AntiToxins ASAP. Keep the probiotics to them also so you can get the good "bugs" working in their stomach and keep them warm...

Tips to get a heifer to claim her calf

Keep tying a leg back and give her time. The more the calf eats, the more he'll start to smell like her. Sometimes it just takes time. I've never had luck with sedating the cow and I strongly believe it just isn't the answer for this situation. If you give the cow time, she'll get there. Good luck!

    Pelvic Measurements

We usually pelvic measure around 60 days before bull turnout. We haven't placed a lot of emphasis on the measurements for culling, but if they are really small in comparison to the group average, we'll cull her.

    Cow slipped on ice...advice!

If she seems sore, banamine. Dexamethosone will induce labor.  Otherwise, if possible, sort her off and give her a few days of rest from the herd. Sometimes they just need a few days to re-gain their feet and get back to full form I know we've had trouble with ice build-up around waterers and...

    Lice, Help!

Find a product that is specific for Lice. If its not on the label, its not covered! We've had good luck with cyclence and clean-up. The key is to keep them poured  and be on the look out for unusual/extra rubbing. Good Luck!

    Moody Hiefer

Find a product that works specifically for lice and keep them poured. Watch for signs of them itching/rubbing more than usual in case a product isn't working to its full potential. Work with her everyday. Try not to get into to too much of a routine with her, as she'll get used to it and start...

    Nervous steer

Have you ever tried tying him to an old show cow and exposing him to new things? It may help by offering him a "buddy" that he can't get away from and that can absorb his actions (jumping, trying to kick, etc.) Some calves just take longer to gain trust, while some may never truly trust someone...

    wild heifer

When you say she behaves 'relatively well' around you and your grandpa, is it nervous behaviors or is it aggressive behaviors? If she's nervous, try to expose her to everything possible, make sure when you do though that you stay calm on the rope. The calmer you are when introducing new...
