    Clones and breeding.......

I think you've hit the nailed on the head with the semen price, quality of cows, etc.  Another thing to probably add to that list is that we see difference in calves of original Heatwave and Heatwave 1208945 because the [i]type[i] of cows we keep, breed and run are different than they were 10...

    Double muscled steak

Most of what I've read, especially in cattle, says that its more so due to the increase in number but there is a small increase in size so as a general rule I consider it a number increase.  If you find a citation, send it my way.  I'd be interested. The double muscled phenotype can be...

    Double muscled steak

Muscle fibers in a double muscled animal are not bigger, but rather there are more of them.  Myostatin is a negative regulator of muscle development which means at a point in development, myostatin is turned on and tells the fetus to stop differentiating cells into the precursors of muscle...

    Grand Island Nebraska Facilities

I've heard the same.  Also, does anyone know what the WiFi situation is?  The website says WiFi access but does that mean it's one of the pay $10 a day to use it type of things?

    Honor Show Chow Finishing Touch

We switched over to the Purina feeds a handful of years ago because our local feed store doesn't have the custom mix business to keep the mill up and running well.  Our custom mixes tended to be extremely variable within each batch,  molasses distribution mostly.  We've had good luck with it...

    alternative leg fitting method?

Ah, that makes sense.  Brain is beyond fried today, forgive me.  I did learn that if you are fitting black cattle that can't be painted and get them too white, Prime Time over the tail can help take some of the white tint out.  Haven't had to try it yet, but have been told it works!

    alternative leg fitting method?

WB, can you not paint?? Old world, what's your reasoning on using primetime after tail?

    alternative leg fitting method?

I have no patience and generally go straight for the tail.  (lol) And less steps if I know I'm going to coat it with tail anyway.

    alternative leg fitting method?

What do you take it out with?  Hocus Pocus is pretty tough on hair.  I like EZAll, it's a little pricey though.  But it's more gentle, you an blow it out then run water on it for a long time and use minimal soap to cut the rest of the oil.  Make sure you are conditioning and/or using show sheen...

    animal science universities

Shorthorn Girl, a lot of people have brought up a lot of really good thinking points.  At the end of the day, it is your decision and yours only.  You are the one who has to be happy with it.  A very smart person told me when I was thinking about grad school and possibilities of continuing to a...

    th phenotypes

Please show me where I said it had no correlation to winning.  As far as I'm aware I haven't.

    th phenotypes

Yes I agree, few purebreds win major shows.  I'm not trying to prove points, just throw out possibilities.  Here's a couple for club calf/non purebred breeders: Some people only test and sell their calves that are worth a dang and the phenotype of the "typical" THC is that it is worth a dang...

    th phenotypes

Just a way to look at it.  That is how things happen around some farms, not all.  I think in the purebred sector you see this more.  For example, a breeder has a THC cow that he just can't seem to part with.  Any bull calf he gets out of her that is THC isn't going to get to stay a bull because...

    th phenotypes

twistedh, sex determination does work the same way in the sense of probabilities.  THC has a 50% chance of passing on the affected allele and a 50% chance of passing on the normal allele.  A THF animal passes on the normal allele 100% of the time.  In mammals, the male is the sex determining...
