Some will cuss Joker and his disposition issues...but, for the most part, he was a cow-maker for us.  The bulls haven't been as good as the females in our experience though.

Understand your comment.   We'll all seen a great pictured one be "just average" when view in person.

However, many good cattle men also saw this bull (in person) and thought that he was, in fact, THE REAL DEAL.

I am sure confused by how he is breeding though.  I'm think it's more than just a freshman slump.  Shoot, we even left the SP-sired embryos in the tank this last spring!

Will be interesting to see what happens with him in the next couple calf crops.  There have been some good ones out of him, but he was bred to some of the best females in the country.

Interesting....might have to think over trying him again.

Always searching for something to use on the Dream Ons and Built Rights.

Perhaps we need to try Mo Better again; there have been some good ones.  We tried him when he was first out, and it just didn't work...very plain, ugly cavles.  They did grow, but just not enough style or thickness.  Now your heifer certainly has style.  Perhaps we just mated him wrong.

Trademark has worked well for us.

Be anxious to see how these heifers develop....Hope they do well for you.  These heifers being out of a good mother should only help the equation.

Now Star Power...best I could say is that the jury is still out.  I won't comment on any others opinions of the bull...just my own (several others have been posted on this board), but our remaining semen will stay put in the tank.  Our S.P.'s are below average in our herd; very surprised as he was used on some darn good cows, and, with his lineage, I would have thought that he would've been almost a "can't miss."

He looks pretty good; certainly worth a try....very strong genetically as well.  I would expect those crazy-a** growth numbers to back down some though.  Decent performance in his pedigree, but not crazy-growth like the numbers say.

You've seen cripples out of Grandmaster....I would not have guessed that?

The Big Show / Re: Simmental nominations for the bull bracket

My Nominations

Dream On
Meyer 734
Black Joker
Built Right
ER Big Sky

I'm relatively new to this board, but this tournament deal is cool.  I like the idea of splitting brackets by breeds, and then have a "championship drive" in the end.  That way a more common bull can't knock a PB breed legend out of the picture early in the rounds....It will also give a truer read of how people feel about different types of bulls in each breed.  My humble opinion.

The champion from last year....734....anyone know or care to share his history????  When did he first sell, how much did he sell for, etc?  I've heard stories through the years that are amazing, but I'm not confident enough that they are 100% true to repeat them to anyone.  If anyone knows his history, I'm interested.  Should just cut to the chase and ask Mr. Meyer sometime, I guess.  Gary Meyer is a great old cowboy who's raised some good ones....however, I bet that he never would've guessed that 734 would be his greatest contribution to the industry!

Yes, Callahan made the comments mentioned, but about OU fans.  Callahan is a thing of the past here....Former AD Steve Pederson and Billy have very few allies in this state...Comments such as he frequently made didn't sit well with the state.  BTW,my friends in Oklahoma have teeth and aren't married to cousins....One other note....Callahan's comments regarding the Prima Donna Josh Freeman perhaps were uncalled for, but Freeman (or his dad) did indeed handle the whole situation in a very poor manner.  Wish him luck in the pros, though I was perfectly content to see him sacked 12 times by the Huskers in 3 years....and go 0 for 3 against us!

OSU looks stout on offense this year...Dez Bryant is the man...but can they keep other teams out of the endzone?

UT (burnt orange does make me puke) and OU (no longer "Big Game Bob") both will be tough.

Look for Baylor, yes...Baylor, to be very competitive this year.

In the North, I think it's Nebraska and KU....that tough Big 12 South Schedule that KU has should allow Nebraska to win the North.  The Huskers should be markedly improved on defense...with perhaps the number 1 defensive force in the country in Ndamukong Suh.  There are some offensive question marks....but if you keep the other team from scoring, good things can happen.  I give them the biased nod over KU due to the fact that KU's defense was porous last year and shouldn't be much better in '09.  I have Nebraska with a 9-3 regular season with 2 Big 12 losses.  Anxious to see any rebuttals.

Hope Misery goes 0 and 12!

Go Big Red.

Can't comment on the BW status of SP himself, but I can talk about the calves.  We have had 4 born here; all out of PB Simmy cows.  Our second best fall heifer is an SP...granted her momma is a top end cow.  The 3 spring calves are all decent, but none have the killer look.  Birthweights on the calves.....only the fall heifer at 92 pounds broke the 90 pound barrier....so that was not a problem.

The bottom line.  All of the SP semen stayed in the tank this spring; none went into cows or heifers....bred to  Built Right and In Dew Time where we wanted to use Dream On sons.

The Big Show / feeding beet pulp

How much quantity-wise do y'all recommend for breeding heifers (before it is wet)...say they weigh 1000 to 1100# right now.  Any other special techniques with pulp?
