The Big Show / Hauling from North Dakota south (to Nebraska)
« on: March 21, 2013, 07:52:00 AM »
We will have an empty 30 foot trailer (with 3 compartments) heading back south from the Bismarck, North Dakota area this weekend.  Our final destination will be central Nebraska.  If we can assist in moving any livestock back this direction, drop me a PM before Friday evening.

Would Anchor or the Anchor clone work on heifers.  Also, Thinking BC Lookout on first calf heifers.  Would anyone have reservations with that? Also, Is there any Anchor Clone calves out there? How do they look?

Thomas...BC Lookout can be used on heifers, but, from our experience, they need to be closely managed.  They WILL NOT calve as easily as the Legends, though we like the end product better.  Our Lookouts have all come out of high percentage Simmental heifers, so that adds some weight to the birthweight equation.  Our 1/2 blood Lookouts in production have all been good milkers....some of the Legends can get a little short in that regard.

Certainly not giving up, just trying to be proactive and start thinking about potential options.

Spring is getting closer and I'm getting more and more nervous about pasture.

I'm curious what kind of moisture situation the rest of the central U.S. is in?

We are facing the possibility of having to get rid of a sizeable number of cows...and just want to start figuring out how far from home we made need to go to find buyers.  We are in Central Nebraska and are probably as dry as we've ever been in my 43 years.

Refuse to dump them at the local salebarn...I will search to find them new homes.

Thanks for any updates of your moisture/pasture situation for the coming year.

I've noticed, in the last 3 to 4 years, many customers are interested in more and more white chrome in breeding cattle....both bulls and females.  Our chromed up ones the last few sales have sold extremely well.

Had a 3C Macho ET calf 3 years ago that we had in the cradle, ready to be castrated, due to color....just couldn't do it, as he was too good of calf in type....but he had white up to his belly on all 4 legs....Hesistantly put him in the catalog and got call after call on him.  Ending up selling for $2500 ABOVE the sale average!  My lesson was learned; even though white is not desirable to me, some customers like it...and the customer is always right.  Take that a step farther, and we had a chromed up bull last year bring over $15,000.

We've got one this year with a white strip on his shoulder, in addition to legs.  Two black goggle-eyes.  Really good calf.  Might even give him a try, even though it's against everything we've ever thought was right, color wise!

Everyone likes something different.

Last year I walked through the jungles pen, I thought he was known as a functional breeder of bulls. I have to be honest, what I seen floored me. A bunch of small framed clubby looking yearlings with absolutely no performance. When your fat as a tick and struggling to have a 1000lbs yearling weight u have a problem. They looked like a club calf breeders pen. Then there was a group of fall bulls that had no muscle and carried  a ton of fat. Nothing against u shorty guys but I  couldnt  see any commercial good in that set of bulls. What exactly do the shorthorn breeders think works on all the angus cross females in the country side ?

We've all had that cow....

Equally disheartening is the cow that has one really good one to start off, then after that her calves are subpar.  Keep thinking she'll hit that homerun again, but just not happening...  Hate to get rid of her as I'm sure the next one will be the super one!

I agree with some of what everyone has posted, but certainly don't agree with everything anyone has posted!

Understand what I'm saying???   :)

Hope everyone has an excellent Thanksgiving and enjoys some college football...it's approaching the end.

And, Go Big Red!
