I have been studying genetic defects in cattle while trying to follow the DS thread and learn the terms.
I see that in Australia, different tests are offered, including one for alpha-mannosidosis. https://genetics.zoetis.com/australia/products/beef/mannosidosis.aspx
This topic was address on steerplanet in 2010 regarding the Red Angus Association head on approach.
There were some wise words there, something like "which is why trust is useless if no one test breeds sires on daughters."

Has this defect shown up in any of the reincarnations of Aberdeen Angus from old Scotch semen?

The thing that caught my attention was the occurrence of alpha-mannosidosis in North East Scotland and again in Australia, a importer of Scottish cattle back in the day. Once replanted in Australia, the Scotch cattle grew into a new population, Murray Grey being a subset of the imported Angus genetics mixed with some Shorthorn, also imported from Scotland. (my gist of it, not verified history)

This defect is described as
"a lethal disorder linked to a genetic condition affecting Angus, Murray Grey and Galloway cattle. There are two versions of the condition caused by two separate genetic mutations, one affects Angus and Australian Murray Greys; the other affects the Galloway breed. These two mutations cause the same disease and both affect the same gene1. Affected calves express a number of symptoms including head tremors, uncoordination, aggression, nervousness and failure to thrive1,7. Most calves die shortly after birth or within the first year and some are aborted during pregnancy."..."The Angus mutation has also been found in North America5 and in Aberdeen Angus in Scotland6"

NZ Galloway cattle society states that the condition is only known in Belted Galloway cattle. http://www.nzgalloway.co.nz/alpha_mannosidosis.html
