Blue Roan Simmentals????
« on: December 27, 2013, 12:44:01 PM »
Just seen a pic of a pretty good purebred blue bull. How common are they, and are they frowned upon by breeders or not???

I think I saw the same picture as you did. I don't follow Simmentals too closely but I sure was shocked to see a purebred blue one!

7/8 is PB for simmys; he's been bred up to PB status just kept that white allele so he's blue...he's just as "legit" a purebred as an Angus bred simmy up to pb status, just he sticks out like a sore thumb!! We've shown a pair of darn good blue percentage simmys and have found many of the simmy people aren't terribly keen on the color and the cross it represents. We've taken a lot of strange looks and jokes from it. Most will admit the cattle are good; while commenting that that's not the direction their program will ever head. Some of the younger more open minded guys are pretty positive about it though. I would imagine a purebred would be seen as even more of a black sheep than a %, but that's just me and our experiences.

Proves 7/8ths isn't enough.  If the roan coloring is still retained from the breed- up breed, what other (non Simmental) characteristics have been retained as well?

what other genes are linked with roaning that contribute to physical characteristics?

To each their own but I sure wouldn't want any blue roan simmys for anything ! That's a Shorthorn trademark that should be left with the Shorthorn breeders period ! Nothing wrong with them but it won't ever be happening here. Sometimes I believe the " hodge podge " factor goes way too far.

He is 15/16 and not just 7/8.

What is his registered name?

Good thing the black Simmis aren't an Angus trademark.  Seriously.  ::)
