Heifer Pairs for Fort Worth Commercial Heifer Sale
« on: January 28, 2008, 03:30:09 PM »
We have two pens of heifer pairs going to Fort Worth Thursday as part of the Commercial Heifer Show and Sale.  Heifers are there at the same time as the steer show.  Sale is on Sunday.  There will be around 65 pens (10-12 hd ea).  For anyone looking for very good replacement females (everything from club calf mommas to purebred Angus to "eared" cattle) this is a very good sale with reasonable price cattle.  Bred heifers usually run from $1200 on up and pairs usually bring from $1800 on up.  Its very well run for both buyers and sellers, legitimate pricing (no "running"), and sale management will work with you to get them to their new homes.

The bull in the photo is a 3 yr old Lifeline son out of an Angus cow we use for cleanup on them.

I got "called" to go start on something else just as I started to take pictures so didn't get many.  Calves you see are our of an Angus bull (a RAB Bluemoon son) or a purebred Maine out of an older bull called Focus.

Based on palpation results, 7 out of 10 heifers in one of our pens appears to be confirmed bred to Heat Wave for their second calf.

Our two pens of heifers did well at the show and sale.  We had the Reserve Exotic pen (out of about 15 pens from folks like Griswold, Reimann, Tollivers, McGowan, and others).  That pen brought $1900 a pair.  I honestly preferred our other pen which the buyers did too.  They brought $2300 a pair.  All in all, we were pretty happy.  Most of the better cattle brought in these ranges ($18-2500).  Griswold had a very good pen of purebred Angus pairs AI'd back to Steel Force that brought $3K I believe.

Those buyers of your pairs got a good deal.  There were several heifers in your groups that I would have loved to have in my herd.  Sorry I wasn't able to catch up with you and sawboss last week.  Between having the crud and having to work, I was only able to stick around long enough to get our steers fit.  Great job at Ft. Worth, and hopefully your 3 pens for next year do just a well.
Winning isn't everything, but you have to want it.

ZNT - Darrin (the guy that was helping us clip) has come down with full-blown pneumonia following his week at the show.  We were all sick last week and had a fairly miserable time just getting through it.

How'd your steer do?

I don't remember there being a set of Carney Mans, but I might have just missed them.  Griswold had some good heifers there.  He had a couple of spring-calving, bred heifer pens that were mostly Irish Whiskeys and Cervezas.  I'm not sure what they brought.  We bailed out as quick as ours went through.

We have to go through a pretty tough screening process to get in, so really most of the black cattle in there are pretty darned good.  There are always bargains toward the back end of it.  Buyer numbers were down this year.
