Lambs won't brace .....
« on: June 07, 2013, 03:30:59 PM »
Out of all the years we have shown and raised sheep we have never had a prblem getting one to brace. Well this year my two best lambs won't brace. I have tried backing them off the table and having someone come up and poke their hind ends, that isn't working. Do you guys have any suggestions on things I could do to get them to brace? I was thinking about the whole shocker idea but have offically decieded against that one . The show is coming up fast and so I need help fast . Give me something even if you don't know if it will work I will try it! Thanks! <beer>

I think someone on this site suggested backing them into a fence.

Just a regular fence, drive them back into it. (I am sure this does not mean to the point you could injure them)

I back all my show lambs into panel, be careful of the tail though, if it hasnt completely healed from banding it can cause it to bleed, then you have to deal with scabs and stuff... I also have backed them off the trailer too. Both work it just takes time and patience, some lambs I've basically had to drive them a ways into a fence, eventually they will get it figured out and give you a hard brace as soon as you put pressure on them. ( they will get tired of you driving them backwards across the yard....and will want to go forward....I do this before I start to break them to lead.) Hope this helps a little bit for you! Good Luck!

I had a goat last year. He wouldn't brace to save his life. I tired everything. I even backed him into an electric fence. The only thing that worked was I dug a hole about 1 for into the ground and filled it with water then backed him into it. After about 5 times he braced every time

Please do not abuse your animals just to make them "show" well.  Gives the industry a bad name, and makes you look lazy for trying to make quick easy work out of something. Do not use electric fences, hot shots, hitting, and slapping. I have no problems with a water hole, board fence, panal fence, etc.

I will try the water hole. I would never use abuse to get my animals to show well thats why I said I don't want to use the shocker or electrice fence...
