My youngest son has two Brangus heifers he shows, at our county fair this year his oldest girl wins breed and division with the baby getting buried.  Two months later at a local jackpot show we have the exact same judge, who buries the older heifer and then uses the baby for Reserve Champion.  His comments, "Cattle are like people, we all look better on certain days".
"Be who you are, not who people expect you to be."

We were at a jackpost this year. The judge said, in EVERY class... "I really like how THREE DIMENSIONAL" this calf is"!!!! Never heard that one before! I just wondered if he was related to SD? Must have some supernatural powers to see a calf coming at him in 3D!!! We had quite a time laughing about it all day. By the way, my sons calf was not considered 3D!!

"Son you are the best steer showman out here hands down, but the girls and their heifers just travel smoother".

I was also wondering if the breeder from Texas had both Brahman and Shorthorns. Because those are some of the most humorous reasons I have ever herd.

I know exactly who this is, as I'm sure so do many on the board.  We showed under him (rhimes with jim) several times, always with good results.  I think that on his good days he is as good in lining up and reasons as anyone in the nation.  On his bad days, he gets pretty bad, even saying thaings about kids that need npt be repeated.

If I have my years right, after the first class of heifers at the 1994 Maine-Anjou Junior National show, he stopped the show and asked to be put on the barn microphone.  His words were, " You fitters need to clip the hair around these udders so I can see if these heifers are going to make a cow.  If a heifer comes in the ring, and I can't see teats, she's going to the bottom of the class.  And, I better not see any tall, pointed tail heads either".

He did a great job of lining up the heifers that day.

I'm not a big fan of his Showmanship Judging.  He likes to pick those who "work" alot in the ring.  One that has really spent the time at home to where the calf needs no special attention doesn't have a chance.

I also wonder when a single calf became cattle, as in "this is a good cattle.." Grammer police at your service.  (thumbsup)

Agree here. What is with that? Hoge thing I think

Well known Shorty breeder judged the big heifers at Lima this year. He's giving reasons on the Shorty class. Faults his 1st for giving up style and balance to the 2nd and says she may just appear overpowering due to her age advantage and heavier in calf, then he says the 2nd is flawless in her design, structure, rib, and muscle pattern, while having the best balance and profile in the class. If flawless, how's she gonna be 2nd? I think upon further analysis he may have reconsidered, so he went ahead and made them Grand and Res overall

I've had a few wierd comments from judges on my cattle.
   - Latest one has been, 'This heifer is definately the most complete, longest sided, soundest,  broodiest heifer in the class.  She's the kind that i would want in my cow herd and is definately going to raise some great calves.  But i place her at the bottom of the class today because she is too long from hooks to pins.  ???
    - Had one judge tell me in showmanship last year at county, "Nice group of showmen in the ring for final selection.  The blondes are all doing just an awesome job.  Everybody answered the questions great and have done a great job showing this afternoon, i will now go select my champion senior showman."  Walks over to shake the hand of the champion.  It's me... and im brunette :D...  i was and still am puzzled about that..
Impossible as they may seem, you've got to fight for every dream, because who's to know which one you let go would have made you complete

AGR last weekend. Consistently in the one ring the judge would say I am giving up mass for structural correctness. An til this one class just before ours. There was a calf that kind of marked like a dalmation and was really massive. Travled okay but was kind of downhill and sloppy fronted. But you could not stop looking at the calf. The judge said in his reasoning, I am going to make an exception today, that holsteined marked calf is just beautiful. You can't take your eyes off of him. He just pops out at you. Well YEAH in a class of black calves, he stuck out like a sore thumb. But in this case the color helped the calf a bunch.

Ring B, our calf was criticized for being too massive and he said, I would like to have some of his hair off. I would like to see what is under that hair. You should body clip him.
Life is too short....don't sweat the small stuff.

Had a national judge do our county fair a couple of years back. Aside from being rude to some kids, and telling ringmen "I dont have time for this....I have S*** to do, he made some pretty strange comments.
One that sticks out pretty bad,

Looks right at a little girl in Junior Showmanship, and tells her that she can surely show a calf, but her steer is not finished well enough to place in the top end of the class

Well I haven't heard anything wierd in an actual class but I have been asked an unusual question in showmanship. The judge asked the whole class what we named out calves. Now remember that this was a class full of 17 and 18 year olds. No one understood why he asked us what we named out calves. I found it very unusual.

I've only judged a few shows but I always asked what the animals name was especially the older kids. For me it is a a good way to sort out the kids who say "I don't care to name it, it's just going to die any way." Though not scientific I have found that the kids whose animals are named are better feed, fitted, shown and are of overall better quality then steers without. I think compassion for the livestock we care for is important for anyone who is a steward over them, and for as much time as a child should spend with their animal some sort of identification shouldn't be out of the question.
There are three kinds of people in life: those who can count and those who can't.

In the two shows I judged I always asked the kids what their favorite beer was. I have found that moderate drinkers are better cattle people than tee-totalers. The kid that told me beer was for sissies(I like makers mark whiskey). I used his steer for grand cause that is my favorite whisky also. The two kids that prefered speed I went ahead and bottomed out. I put the crack guy half way up just to tick the parents ringside off. I also think it is important to physco anyalize the kids to see if they are Democrats or Republican. I tend to put independents and repubs a little higher. But It also depends on what the phase of the moon is.jmo
People can't believe we have such a big moon for such a small town.
