Our fair is in July and we show pigs as well. Our pigs are born in January and purchased by others at the end of March. Look for a feeding program weather it be through your local feed mill, purina or another "brand" of feed.
We will use an auto feeder until they reach a 175 lb weight and...
That's what I thought but I was having an issue getting a straight answer at the local store. At this point we need the full control because our steer is over 1200lbs for a beginning of August Fair.
We are feeding Purina Full Control except the feed is really dusty and old looking. There is date of July 2012 on the tag. Does anyone know if there is an expiration on this or what?
Do you know what he weighs now? I agree that the flank will improve with the increase it weight. Also I agree with the need to feed 3% of the calves body weight per day. Beet pulp in the feed can also help with adding depth.
We had an Eye Candy steer last year. He was very long and didn't really come on until our fair. He finished at 1350 but not an easy feeder IMO. He did carcass out real well and was chose as grand champ. He did seem to slow down once the warm weather hit. We do not have a cooler either but...
1. When is your fair?
2. Where are you located?
3. Do you wash the calf often? The poop can be very hard on the hair and if your goal is to grow hair that isn't going to help.
He seems a bit high flanked and something is off at the pins.
I think the pictures make it a little hard to judge. He seems to be quite long. Possibley a little pinched in the heart, but again hard to tell because of angle of the picture. How much does he weigh?
In our county the grand champion and reserve champion beef, sheep and swine sell first. After that it is luck of the draw. At each weigh in the exhibitor pulls a number which determines the sale order. Each exhibitor is only allowed to sell one animal even if they are a champion in more than...
Congratulations on taking that step to a bigger show. We started doing the same a few years ago and the first show was a little bit of a shock :o
The previous posts are right on. Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time to prepare for the show. Verifying how long the judge seems to...
Where are you from? What venue are you showing him at? It's difficult to see in the pictures but does he has a lot of hair?
Depending on what your show requirements are may affect my opinion I guess.
I had the opportunity to see a heifer show recently and it seems that judges are wanting big bodied heifers. More like the shape of a steer. You don't seem to hear as much about a heifer looking feminine. I can understand a market heifer having the big body but I guess I am thinking it isn't...
The angus seems to work well with Monoply. She holds her head real nice too. I hope you post more pics as she grows. Has anyone else had success with Monopoly and angus?
