    Fireball Whiskey calves?

We have a Fireball Whiskey x (I80 x Friction) heifer calf on the ground that is really good. She was about 75 lbs when she was born and got right up and went to nursing. I would agree with Justin that Josh Blackford's FW calves are really good as well.

    orphaned calves as show animals?

Definitely yes.  A friend of ours won a class at junior nationals with a bottle calf, and we've got one in the string this year.  They were/are fall calves.  The key for us has been to get them on feed as soon as possible, which seems to help not get that pot belly.

    Hereford Paint

Jsuhr one thing I have had success with in just painting spots on herfs (esp the dark red ones) is to put betadine on the spot starting about a week or two out from the show. It gradually darkens the spot and you can control where the betadine lands.

    Hereford Paint

I personally prefer the weaver paint, especially the fawn and the cinnamon. There is also a line of stains from Michael's craft stores that works really well as a finishing coat if you have a really strange shade, especially the lighter orange. Painting herfs is a bit more of a challenge than...

    animal science universities

If you're looking at either nutrition or genetics, you might want to look at the University of Illinois.  I'm going to be a senior in the fall, and I have loved every minute.  There's no denying that some of the classes are fairly difficult, especially the chemistry classes, but it is hard to...

The use of EPD's in the show ring.

5 or 6 years ago at a Hereford Jr. National the judge had been preaching about how programs needed to utilize epd's and he had been talking epd numbers in his reasons, etc.  Well I walked into a class and the calf that won it didn't have any numbers at all, the reason (I think) is because the...

    County-bred restricted shows?

A county here in IL has a seperate county-bred class.  If the animal was bred/born in the county it can show in that class, and it doesn't matter if the owner lives in the county or not.  I won it last year with a Hereford;  it paid really well, and there seemed to be a lot of support from the...

    Purdue AGR

On the heifer side of things Chamberlain's had grand with a Maine heifer and Bloomberg's were reserve with a Simmi.  I don't remember who had them, but Angus, Low % Simmi and Commercial champions finished out the top 5.  Turn out was definitely down.

Mats or NO Mats for your trailer?

We have mats and I love them.  During show season we put down bedding.  I have used ground corn cobs which I love because they absorb a lot of moisture, but they don't seem to go very far.  I now put down mulch and then put the ground cobs on top, this seems to give the calves a lot of comfort...
