    Water Cooler for Ice Bath

Rinsing with ice water will do a great job growing hair.  We've never had a cooler and for a few years now we have rinsed our best calves with ice water twice a day and it has done a wonderful job growing hair.  A lot of people with coolers still rinse with ice water to lower steers core...

    calving

Running about 90% overdue on calves this year here, anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks.  None of the calves have been huge, a couple around the 100# mark, but the rest have been in the 80s.  Funny thing is that the only monster I have had this year was a week early.  I guess the good thing about...

    Hereford Hair

The best way I've found is when you get done rinsing, get a blower on them IMMEDIATELY!!!  Don't leave their hair wet very long or it will only make the kinks and curls that are there worse.  And when you think they are dry, keep blowing.  I haven't dealt with herefords much before we bought a...

    Top 5 cows

I'm no angus guy but I'm surprised no one has mentioned Forever Lady 57D.  That cow made a lot of great females over the years.  I saw her toward the end of her life at the ET center in Kentucky and she wasn't much to look at, but she cranked em out for more than a few years.

    3020 JD tractor

We have 2 3020's and one had a bad habit of eating starters.  Went through 3 or 4 of the old style starters in a 2 year span.  We finally bit the bullet and paid a little more money and bought a newer style gear reduction starter and have had little to no trouble.  The first one lasted 4 years...

    Simmy Bull Uno Mas

Purdue had a smokin good red blaze halfblood Uno Mas in the Hoosier Beef Congress simmi sale out of a commercial simangus cow.  She was my pickof the sale heifers of any breed.  Super soft, plenty of muscle, and a really cool look.

Damn Proud in Louisville On display

She sold for 5k I think going to Brandon Bird and Mike Huston.  She's goin to be a steer making machine.  Really stout, moderate, big middled.  Not huge boned but plenty adequate.  I was at the sale and helped Ron and Christy at Louisville and Damn Proud and the 5 daughters that were there...

    Judges on the Mic

OHB - I'll take a stab at your early maturing question first.  To me, early maturing is short boned, headed, bodied, etc.  Those calves get there quick but never get to an optimum size, like finish at 1000 or 1050 instead of 1250 or 1300.  A lot of these little headed and short cannon boned ones...

    Judges on the Mic

I usually avoid posting on topics like this because I know how controversial these discussions can be.  I can see both sides of the debate on soundness in the show ring vs. soundness in the feedlot/heifer mates/etc.  We feed cattle for a living and I'm gonna say that by the time our cattle get...

Anybody Else Feeding hay in June?

I've probably got more than enough new hay to last through the year, plus about 60 bales left over from last year, but I'm not going to sell any and take a chance on running out.

Anybody Else Feeding hay in June?

Lookin pretty tough around here.  Not feeding hay yet, pastures grew back enough after cutting to last another couple weeks.  Crops on the hills are in bad shape, bottom ground is hanging on a little longer but it has taken a beating the last few days with wind and no humidity.  April planted...
