We just had this same issue last week. Apparently if a cow has a hard labor the "maternal" hormone Isn't released but the more you milk/ feed the calf the sooner the hormone kicks in. We let the calf eat 3 times the first day and that night we penned the cow and put the calf in the next pen. ...
We have never fed only once per day. I believe that feeding twice per day is the best however you can consider feeding more at one feeding versus the other. For instance if your calf seems to eat better in the evening then you can provide a larger amount of the daily ration in the AM.
We treat the flank hair just like the rest. Conditioning spray, brush with the rice root mix brush, blow dry, spray in oil, brush, dry. Over and over and over again = )

My son won his first Grand Championship at the county fair with a pure bred steer. He also won Reserve Champion Breeding Female. Our niece won Junior Showmanship. So overall we had a great fair and we are now getting ready for the State Fair.

In December he was middle of the pack in his class because he was lacking a bit in finish. We fixed that problem and by May he was first in his class. For the county fair he took 3rd. The judge felt he had too much finish, but I have always felt that you could never have too much finish.
