    Question About Retesting bulls

We'll retest at least the one bull, but it will be in about a month, and before breeding season is here. As far as finding bulls, they are always some out there, but Bull Sale season is pretty close to over and if we wait a month to look, most (if not all) of the Quality ones will be long gone...

    Question About Retesting bulls

They spent the winter with the cows, on the other side of the fence from the yearling heifers, and we had a couple dry cows turn up in late winter. They've been separated from the cows about a month.

    Question About Retesting bulls

We had BSEs done on all our bulls a couple of days ago. The vet called the next morning and said that one had a bunch of bent tails, and another had pus in his semen. He says to give the one with the infection 4 treatments with micotil and retest in a month. And just to give the other about 3-4...

    Can't get calf to nurse...

First of all will she suck at all? By now she's got to be hungry. Stick your finger in your mouth and if she'll suck you'll know it. If she sucks, chances are that she got kicked and is scared to suck. If that is the case try getting her to suck on the bottle and once she's going good on it...

    safe calving pen size

Even 8x8 should be fine in a pinch. Our barn is mostly 10x10 stalls and we've never had an issue. We've even had to double up on occasion without problems.

    Optimal Regional Phenotypes

OK, here's a reply from a commercial producer in Sask, Canada. I personally have no interest in 1600-1800 lb cows, they are simply too big and rarely perform as well as they need to in my area. Granted I am about as far south in Sask as you can get and still be in Canada. I like to see a frame...

    How long to wait?

I would have pulled that calf too, as long as she had had the waterbag. That's a long time. Sure you might have helped her earlier than necessary, and heifers tend to show signs of calving as soon as they feel uncomfortable, but you got a live calf. I don't know if I would ship her or not...

    Blue Roan?

White Shorthorns are HOMOZYGOUS ROAN.  . That is the funniest thing I have read in a while, and with that I will not ever post on this subject again. I knew better.... So why dinto you explain it?

    Blue Roan?

Essentially, with a F1 Shorthorn x Angus you have no guarantee of getting a Blue Roan calf, no matter what you breed her. Speckle Park wouldn't give you a true blue roan as that is a different colour pattern altogether. With Speckle Park crossed to your Blue Roan you would most likely get a...

    Blue Roan?

It seems that you are right about that. I looked that up on Wikipedia and I now understand the difference between Incomplete and Co- Dominance. I would have to disagree with both your professor and Wikepedia, however on the idea that you couldn't get a Red Roan from a mating of a Blue Roan to a...

    Question for Canadians

We have a calving barn, and most of the people around her have something that they can put a cow inside if the weather is cold, most are not heated or insulated though. We calve in March so we can get some pretty cold weather. Put a camera in it this year, so we have 3 pens that we can watch a...

    Calves not nursing

Selenium can cause a lot of problems. I don't know about abortion though. Calves that get up and going and seem fine then you find them laid out flat for no apparent reason Calves that won't suck Calves that never really get up and going Cows that don't clean Among other things If selenium...
