This is only the opinion of an old man, but I really felt that most of the calves were too small framed to hit the big time. I hope they do well, but they just were not my kind.

This is just talk, but I heard that the top 3 steers all brought 15k. This included the no. 6 steer that I liked. All were said to have left the state.

Went to Goretskas on Fri., really liked the no.6 and no.18 steers.  The no.6 was a Wilson, and was at 15k at that time. Anyone heard anything?

Does anyone know what the formula is for adjusting the 205 day wt. on the calf of a first or second calf heifer, as compared to an older cow. If memory serves me correctly, there was a 10% adjustment for a first timer. I'm not sure about 2nd. Any help much appreciated. Earl

Dick Meyer won the Ia. state fair back in the 80's with a red baldy Simmx limi that is forever etched in my mind. Best one of late is the char that Bob May won the Royal with a couple of years back. He was a Friction. I really liked him.

Shaggy, I would surmise from your post that you haven't been to a sale barn lately. And I'm not talking about a show cattle sale. The barns around here are tough on the small framed show types, although I won't argue that many cows in use today are too large framed. I guess what I'm saying is...

I like Ali in some situations. Good calving ease, good soundness, and the daughters that we have are good milkers as well as good mothers. JMO

I like your steer, and it looks as though you are doing fine feeding him. My comment would be that if he is a little straight, don't trim much off his rear toes. Short toes and straight legs don't work well together in my opinion. Best of luck, you have done well so far.

BAP was right on about Jorgensen, we stopped and looked. Saw a couple great heifers, but the really great steer wasn't there. Good steers for sure, just not that great one. Just one old man's opinion, take it only for what it is worth.

There are times when a calf is born rear legs first, and when the process takes too long, the calf suffocates, and you find a dead calf. This is just one of several possibilities.
