    Halter Breaking a Heifer

Try and find a donkey that has been used to break calves, it will take only a couple sessions and they will lead a lot better. Be careful though because some donkeys will kill a calf.

    Seeking advice

This definitely reminds me of myself. While I was a junior and my dad bought my heifers for me, it kinda wasn't my highest priority. I would do just enough to get them to the show good. Every year I got more interested and the past 3 years I have put a lot of work. I realized the change was the...

Is neck sweating in a cooler counterproductive?

I have a couple of heifers that are getting a little fat necked and have contemplated starting to sweat them. However, they are in a 65 degree cooler and currently growing great hair with 30 more days to the show. So, is it counterproductive to sweat in a cooler? I would do it at night but it's...

    Steer that won't lead

We use a donkey to take the stubbornness out of our calves. It's amazing how quickly they will change after a couple sessions. Also can't complain about not having sore shoulders!

    New Clippers

I just bought a new pair of Wahl KM 10 at the Royal last fall and really like them. It has a brushless motor so it doesn't get hot as quick as my old Andis. my only complaint with them is that there is a slight delay from when you flip the switch to when it starts to run but you get used to it...

    Best AI school

I loved my ai school at Cattle Visions. Carl Newbrough is very good at teaching you exactly what to expect. However, he recently retired so I'm not sure if he is still doing the schools.

    Sure Champ vs Grand 4Tfyer

IMO sure champ is a supplement that is added as a top dressing, whereas grand 4t flyer is a concentrate that you mix with grain and bulk to make a ration. If you Google 4t fyer rations you can find some Purina has suggested. I have used 4t fyer for many years using some of the suggested rations...

led chute lights at Iowa Beef expo

I have used these for 2 years and absolutely love them. $20 a light at walmart. I use duct tape to attach them to the shoot and lay one on the floor. They can be a hassle getting to aim just right but for the money I saved I'm okay with that.

    lowline cross bull

We are using this fullblood lowline bull on our Simmi show heifers. He was supreme at NWSS this year.

    Too much belly

I say the more the better because in the show ring it makes them look more appealing. If you look at all champions at many shows they have ample depth and rib. Seeing as how the heifer is tied up in what looks like a wash rack, then my guess is its a show heifer which means to compete it needs...

    Too much belly

the more belly, rib, and heart capacity the better. I have seen some young heifers with too much fill from the navel back that makes their underlines look weird but that is the only time I've seen too much belly. your heifer looks like she'll do good!

    Homemade Cooler Room

My dad and I built our homemade cooler out of a horse barn stall that is roughly 12 x 12. I definitely recommend spray foam because it has really made a bid different (just be caution of mice). Our 24000 btu ac is set on 50 degrees and does a great job with 2 yearling heifers and a yearling bull...

    ringworm

shapley's MTG is really good too. Basically, you need to keep the spots covered with anything that keeps the skin moist and the "worm" from breathing to kill the ringworm, I'd say it takes a little less than a week to kill it. After that it's about keeping the skin healthy to grow the hair back...

Getting my heifer to take a bottle calf

It is possible if the cow is motherly. I did this last spring with my donor cow after we weaned her calf, her full sib didn't accept her calf, so we took a chance. tie your heifer up and get the calf to nurse while you help. if the cow kicks you can slip a lasso or rope halter on one of the back...

advice needed on what's best for conditioning...

She is very green but that would be expected if she was just put on feed. I think time and consistent good quality feed is all she needs.

    Investment Question

Show cattle is more of a hobby, or a side job, than a business except for a few farms that have been at it for a long time. It can become a business but is very difficult unless you have the perfect formula of reputation, genetics, funds and knowing the right people. However, if you really want...

Using a photographers picture on a website?

Starting a website for my farm and I'd like to use a backdrop picture of a donor cow. Do I need to purchase the picture from the photographer or can I use the picture if I keep their stamp on there? thanks in advance.
