Starting a website for my farm and I'd like to use a backdrop picture of a donor cow. Do I need to purchase the picture from the photographer or can I use the picture if I keep their stamp on there? thanks in advance.

Buy the picture.  If you want to use it, pay him.  Until you pay the photographer the pic is his/her property.  I've been guilty of posting a pic to social media that still has the watermark because I'm impatient but I'll always pay for the pics afterwards.

You don't  necessarily have to buy the photograph but you need permission to use it.  Contact the photographer and see what you can work out.  He may let you use it just for the publicity if give him credit.
