Currently he is on a hayless pelletted ration that my step dad and local feed mill developed of corn and grass seed screenings. I wasn't happy with what I was seening so I've added beat pulp. When I was showing we used the hayless ration but with barley and purinas beef impact supplement. I had...

Yes, sadly he is no where near being done.  I think a lot of it has to do with his age, and also the way we've been feeding him.  We've just started adding beatpulp to his ration and he's been on it about a two weeks.  I can't tell if it has helped him in that time frame or not.  I can say he...

    Opinions

Just looking for some opinions on my brother's late April/first of May Simm/Angus steer.  The plan had been to take him to a June show but I'm afraid we just haven't pushed him hard enough for it so we will take him to the county show in August.  He has a super high tail head so if anyone has...

It is my Ag teachers birthday April 4th. What should the FFA get/do to him?

I vote the fork trick!  Seen it done a couple times; not something one will soon forget. Plus you can tell him you were helping him out by aerating the lawn :)

    prolapsed uterus

I completly know how you feel. My heifer also prolapsed about two weeks ago today. Luckily, she was not pushing when we went to work on her and we were able to get her taken care of within about 30 minutes. Vet told me heifer calf would be ok to keep but do not keep the cow as she is more prone...

    RED

As a "Newbie" to Steer Planet I was first nervous to post but when I did, it was Red who welcomed me and gave me my Karma point.  Although I still don't know what Karma points really are, it was nice to be welcomed and it was even nicer to always know she would have encouraging words for most...

    GW LUCKY MAN 644N

I am looking at purchasing a Simmental first calf heifer sired by GW LUCKY MAN 644N and was wondering what everyone thought about Lucky Man and his daughters.  I've looked him up on-line and most all of the information pertains to his sons, and I can find no information on his daughters and the...

    Friday the 13th

So I added a poll to help me decide what my next step will be with this pair.  I am totally a sucker for this heifer, and she has had the best attitude through this whole ordeal, allowing us to put a halter on her and milk her (and she is NOT halter broke).  I've had some many different options...

    Friday the 13th

Thanks!  The sire is our simmental heifer bull that we raised.  He himself is sired by a son of C&B Junior Stretch out of an Abricot cow. Sadly I do not have any current photos of him so I attached one from long ago when he was about 8 months old.

    Friday the 13th

Thank you both for the encouraging words!  Cow & calf are doing well this morning and were both up ready for breakfast when we went out at about 6:45.  Mama is still nervous of the calf but I think instinct is telling her that it is her baby and she has been talking to her and cleaning her up...

    Friday the 13th

So the day started out just as any other, then I got the call that my simmental first calf heifer was calving. My husband is fairly new to cows so he gave me a play by play over the phone as I was at work. All seem to be ok feet first then head. That's about when "CC" started to get wore out and...

    Age

I've heard a lot of discussion about age of show cattle and people doctoring the paper to make a Nov calf a Jan or even the other direction.  But I don't understand why.  I guess I understand why a heifer guy might want to change the date of an older calf for the size advantage ??? But what's...

    08 Heifer Calf

I thought, "Hey everyone else is doing it, why shouldn't I?"  ;)  This is a late November heifer calf out of a 1998 simangus commercial cow that might have just a touch of ear to her and by our simmental herd bull.  Besides the mud and crazy hair, any thoughts on her or what her "problem...

What breed of dogs do you own?

Miniature Schnauzers are the best!  Big dog in a little dog package!  My Izzie thinks she's the cow dog, mouse getter, people greeter and all around queen of the house, but sshhh don't tell any of the other dogs.  (dog)

What breed of dogs do you own?

When my husband and I got together, he had a lab and I had a border collie, both of which we still have today.  But we've expanded to included our miniature schnauzer, Izzie - and now her 6 babies...

    pet peeves!

Well I appreciate the insight; however, maybe I should clarify.  I was listing pet peeves, not that I act out in a disrespectful or otherwise hurtful way, these are just things that bother me.  Yes, I understand that my elders know more, and I am respectful of that.  However, in my career the...

    pet peeves!

Some of my biggest pet peeves have already been mentioned but I'll say them again, and add a couple. -Elderly people that think just because I am only 24 that they know more than I do.  I am an educated individual and I know what my job is, and how to do it, and yes; I can do it better than...

    Donkey

As far as the donkey goes - just make sure it is not an overly mean donkey.  We got one to try quite a few years back and it attacked the cattle; breaking the jaw of a calf and "swallow tailing" the ear of a show heifer  >:(.  For the puppy, have you tried crate training?  It works!
