New Calving Ease Shorthorn Sire - Last Chance to Place Spring Orders

As you can image with his age, we didn't use him very heavily last fall so we've only had 2 calves to date with more to come in November.  The first two were both out of CCC Gold Rush first calf two year olds, with one having a heifer calf that weighed 65 lbs. and the other had a bull calf that...

A New SteerPlanet Partnership - and a special offer through the end of the year!

We’re pleased to announce the sale of ½ interest and possession in our Hillside Leader bull to Justintime and Horseshoe Creek Farms, Weyburn, Sask.  Grant and I are really excited about the tremendous potential this young bull has to offer and appreciate all the comments and observations many of...

Anyone hauling between Illinois and Iowa?

Let me know when you're going.  Right now I'm trying to get the bull scheduled to go to Illinois for photos and then I need him picked up and hauled over to Hawkeye.  From what they told me it's about 300 miles from their place to Hawkeye.  As it stands at the moment, we're probably looking at...

Anyone hauling between Illinois and Iowa?

In a couple of weeks I'm looking to have a bull hauled from central Illinois (near Springfiled) to either Nichols or Hawkeye for collection.  Can anyone recommend anyone who might be able to make that trip on relatively short notice? Thanks!

BBII Gizmo 61 over Dividend 43

This one goes to Dividend hands down - in fact 20 years from now I wouldn't be sureprised to still see him showing up in a few pedigrees.  Easily the bull that, in his era, did more to change the cattle type AND people's opinions of Shorthorns. First time I saw him was at Alden's as a mature...

    Be Afraid!

Let’s see if I can understand RW’s and knabe’s arguments against uniformity and consistency.  Consumers don’t know what quality is, price per pound is the major driver and that packers really don’t want a consistent product – it’s a pricing gimmick.    If that’s the case then I wasted several...

    Be Afraid!

OH NO - He’s back!  Sorry but for those of you who know me I thought I better offer the warning.  This is a topic that has been a concern of mine for many years and I have to weigh in – so here goes (just remember you were warned!).  I promise to try not to wear out my welcome. The idea of...

    bull down

You might consider hardware disease. We lost a bull like that once - he did almost exactly what your bull is doing.  When the vet examined him he found a small piece of barb wire fence that he'd eaten and it ripped a hole in the rumen.

I think your right- the Sunbeam Groom-master.  You could flip the hoses and actually vacuum your horse or calf.

    Your Opinions

Doc, Thanks!  He's really looking great right now.  I think he'll add some value down the road.  If he can transmit low birth weight with above average growth, I think he'll find a lot of use. Interestingly we've had considerable interest from the Red Angus folks and a few Gert breeders. Joe

That just reminded me - what about using sheep or wool cards?  We used to use them on Herefords (and occasionally a wild haired Shorty) we were fitting for our neighbors.

    Old School Fitting Supplies

Just to make you feel real old (or at least see how old I am) - our old barn didn't have a well or "city" water - didn't need it we had a great creek that ran through the corner of the lot and through the pens. We had 2 pens - one for heifers and one for the steers and bulls.  No fans, just lots...

    Your Opinions

I've decided to change the photo in my avatar and you guys get to vote.  Pick the one you like - you can comment if you choose and we'll see which one goes up. Thanks!! <cowboy> OOPS!  I realized I had the wrong picture as # 1.  Unfortunately it moved it to number 4. Now I'm confused.

    Old School Fitting Supplies

Does anyone remember the very first blowers that were on wheels?  Looked like a big box with a hose on the end of it - they were powder blue with a white tip.  I got mine from a horse trainer when he bought a new one.

I've still got the brownies - in fact I still use them occasionally.  They're great on smaller calves with fine baby hair.  I should be able to keep them running since I have an extra motor for parts that I salvaged. A good friend of mine has an old soft horse hair brush we call the "magic...

    Old School Fitting Supplies

You just had to mention dip - we used milk oil dip and now I can almost smell it.  Not what I needed to think about before supper! Old brownie clippers - I remember finding mine at an estate sale - paid $5 for them and knew I had a deal - they had both flats and sheepheads. Speaking of...
