Steer keeps pulling away and won't let me catch him

Didn't see your thread Knabe... but you should take his advise when you find it. We have a steer this year like that... still after months doesn't like to be caught or lead.  But will (lead) if someone else behind him.  So figure come show time hopefully will fine. Son leaves the rope halter on...

    Steer HATES the blower

We're already sooo overbudget this year on calves I think I'll try the melatonin tablets from walmart.  So if your steer is weighing 1000 lbs how many 5mg tabs do you give a day... and for how long?  Show time still min 60 days out max 120 days out. Need hair and calming!

    Kicking

Ok... I want everyones opinions on the best way to break a calf from kicking.  Do you just keep being sweet to them, or hit them back?  I've heard both... would like everyones  2 cents... thx

    Steer HATES the blower

Today is was about 45 minutes till I pooped out.  I know guess just have to keep at it... I just hate a calf that kicks.  So far lately that's the only time he does.  Just have to watch him.

    Steer HATES the blower

That's pretty much what we've been doing...  the chute we have is a big old handmade thing and he's even hung his leg in the sides... finally got em out, but scared me thinking he was gonna hurt himself.  So now tie him to it but swings around from side to side.  Kicking as he goes.  How long is...

    Steer HATES the blower

Ok... bought the time we think we've got this steer settled down he continues to show his bad side.  Been working with him with the blower for over a month now (about 2-3x week) and he still kicks moves back and forth, and wouldn't dare stand right behind him with just the hose.  (have it duck...

    Getting the calf gentle

Hope you didn't pay too much for that bugger... IDK but every steer that I've every worked with that tried to charge never got very gentle, and had to get rid of him.  We have a couple steers this years that are a little nuts but have never tried to charge us.  Good luck and like the others have...

    HEIGHTS

Aren't Americans a bit taller and acceptable?  And exotics a little shorter...?  Does getting em fat asap help slow down the height, or does it make a difference?

Showing cattle at a young age

I think a kid should show when they are old enough to want to (tell Mom and Dad) that they are ready) and show and have the responsibility required in tending to the animal.  (feeding and caretaking at least most of the time... not just showing come show time).  When I was a kid it was 9 I...

    HEIGHTS

I'd like to know what heights on steers are the best come show time?  For Americans and say Limi's and Maine classes?  What is too tall?

    Have I not done enough?

As humans every calf is different.  One can be as calm as as a old hounddog and the other can be as wild as a hyena!  We have all types this year.  From what you describe he doesn't sound that bad.  If he's not charging you or trying to run you over he can probably be tamed easily.  It just...

    HEIFERS COMPOSITES

Ok gearing up for breeding season again soon and we have several heifers out of our Maine/Angus (large boned) cows that were sired by a Johnny Walker Red son.  We have all colors... Baldies, Smokies with white faces, a few blacks, a cocoa, and a white heifer. Do we just use angus low...

    Stupid Fair Rules.

Our county is a blow and go.. but pretty flexible I think.  Just don't think anyone use any adhesives though foam I think is used. (like shaving cream)  In Houston last year (our first time there) I rubbed our slick sheer steer with something (didn't even have oil in it) yet they pulled us and...

DHIMMITUDE? (not cattle related) but VOTER RELATED

Dhimmitude -- What does it mean?  Obama used it in the health care bill. Now isn't this interesting? It was used in the health care law. Every day there's another revelation of what Obama and his fellow Democrats are doing to our country.   Dhimmitude -- I had never heard the word until...

    Neck Sweats

They're a pain in the butt to mess with... but help some if you keep at it.  Some cattle like to try and rub them off... I like the sullivans purple ones, but our steers totally tore em up last year rubbing on trees.  If you don't have anything in your pen for em to rub on you're probably good. ...

    Goverment Reality !! N/C

Talking about government... this is a long read but thought some of you might not know all this.  Since my husbands ancestors came from Austria before all this occurred and some were actually Texas Rangers... they fought hard for our freedoms and would be sad I think to see the way things seem...

    Goverment Reality !! N/C

It may not be all the dems fault but during this election all I know the ones I hear speak don't speak my language.  Just watched 60 minutes about all the people on there last leg and unemployed... while thousands are still coming thru our borders some just wanting a better life, and others...
