Can you give MSM to steers???

What do you mean? We sell it at the feed store I work at for horses. Its packaged with a pic of a horse on it including feeding directions. The only bad thing about it is peopel use it to make meth so we have to keep it locked up It's not FDA regulated...AFAIK it's not approved for use in...

Your thoughts on a fund raiser

What are you going to have for expenses at the show?  In our county 4H Clubs can use the fairgrounds at no cost so the only real expense to put on a show would be ribbons and the judge. Why not just have the show stand on it's own.....entry fees pay the expenses? Mike

Can you give MSM to steers???

Good question....as it relates to horses I believe it falls under the catagory of "nutracuticals" so while it may not be approved for use in horses it isn't illegal to feed.  Not sure how it would be looked at as it relates to a beef animal.

New Beef Feeder Steer Division at our County Fair

At our fair the feeder calves are weighed in and the classes spit based on the calves that are there.  Usually there are some pretty natural breaks in the weights and they are easy to split. Mike

New Beef Feeder Steer Division at our County Fair

Do you have any feeder calf classes at your fair? I guess I don't know what the official rules are for or county but it's fairly simple....calves born in the current year shown by weight.

***SteerPlanet Member Vote - Break Classifieds into Categories? ****

Don't know if this is possible but would  it help if you made it more of a Craigslist type format where only the ad was posted and all discusion was done via email or PM?  This would avoid all of the bumps that push newer ads to the bottom.

    Ear tag information

I was thinking the exact same thing.  I have a friend that runs a lot of cows and he puts the heifer tags in the left ear and the bull tags in the right.

    What to charge for hauling

Since it's a friend maybe you could just ask that he pay for the fuel, you have the wear and tear on your pickup and trailer or maybe half the fuel.  You were going anyway so whatever you charge you will be money ahead. Mike

    Distillers to show calves

I think that you can use distillers to make a very good show ration, it will add moisture to the diet and increase palitabilty and intakes.  I think you will find that most, if not all, commercially avaialable show feeds are going to contain by-products like DDG, SBM, and others.

    Distillers to show calves

Not really a good analogy, by-products aren't second hand worn out feedstuffs that are inferior products...many are very useful and very necessary in animal agriculture such as soybean meal, cottonseed meal, fat, blood meal, beet pulp, and many others. Mike

    Needing horse showing adive

Spend lots of time between now and next summer in the saddle, wet saddle blankets win shows.  Clipping. cloths, and clean tack are fine but as I always tell my girls it doesn't matter what you wear if your in the wrong lead. If you are showing 4H clothing will be simple; dark blue jeans, a hat...

    Needing horse showing adive

You should be able to show western in the command class although it would probably be a difficult class for your first show.  Classes like showmanship, halter, and western pleasure would be some really good classes to start with.  Lots of shows have novice classes which would be good.  My kids...

Getting destroyed at market w/ red and white, black w/white legs

So what is the difference between that and the hog market?  The only person in the hog industry that is paid on the carcass is the person that sells the fat hog.

Getting destroyed at market w/ red and white, black w/white legs

The beef industry has already gone that way, most fat cattle are sold on the grid.

    Orvus

Anyone still using Orvus?  Anyone my age (42) has certainly grown up with Orvus but we haven't used it for years.  We show horses and will be going to some Palomino shows this fall and some people still swear by Orvus as the best soap available for getting a mane, tail, and body clean. Mike
