    Denver Bound!

wish you guys were there when we are...the first week.  We're leaving Thursday Jan 14 (I think that's the date) after our lowline show.  Too bad the breeds don't overlap.  Course we'll be in the yards....  Hopefully the weather will be nice, though we don't ever count on it.

    Heifer problem

Agree...if she's too fat she can have problems breeding, even if she's cycling.  Estromate should help them come into heat, though we've found it doesn't always work.  And the Cystorelin (sp?) is used once they've come in heat and helps prevent cysts.  I know we all want to get them bred as...

    Newbie Question

I wondered that myself and 'think' it's because you can feed them somplace other than your display plus exercise to the tie-out.  No hay to clean in the display area...just my guess.

Culling unproductive not up-to standard females

I'd take them to the sale barn and let those people know that's where they can buy them.

    Anyone familiar with BioPryn?

Also remember it only works 90 days or longer after calving because there is residual placental protein post calving.  Also if she has aborted a calf within a 3 month window it may still show as pregnant.  We've been using BioPryn for a few years now and found it's easier and cheaper than having...

    Anyone familiar with BioPryn?

we use BioPryn, too and all it will tell you is whether the cow is pregnant.  I talked with them to see if there was any way to determine when they were bred or how far along they are and was told they tried to figure out a way but there are just too many variables between cows.

Favorite Kind of Bird Dog N/C related

agree with steered, depends on what you're hunting.  I've seen labs used for hunting pheasant/quail plus german shorthairs retreiving ducks. Labs will flush and shorthairs will point, both will retrieve in water but the lab will stay dryer, shorthair will freeze once they're out of the water.  I...

    Halter breaking steers?

I use the same method as Kobo_Ranch and found it to be very successful.  Don't get in a rush, be patient.

    Blood samples

agreed. plus we've had it coming spurting out...that is, until we get the tube on it and then it stops bleeding. it can be very 'challenging' to get blood sometimes.

    Blood samples

we've sent samples to them before with about 1cc (or less) and they were able to test it.  I called them before sending it and they said they like extra in case they need to retest.

What do you think of this heifer?

yeah, Brook did good. Plus she had a red bull the end of July. We're very happy that we were able to work something out to get her.  And Mika Huntrods owns this heifer...

What do you think of this heifer?

Yes, she was grand champ at the NILE.  I'm sure she's not going to any other shows, which is a shame since she's so nice. Schmit has some very nice Bluey heifers too, which we saw when we picked up some calves in August.  We flushed Brook while she was there, 11 embryos and 8 stuck.  We ended up...

What do you think of this heifer?

She's owned by someone in Nebraska, and we're hoping she will bring her to the Denver show. She doesn't do much showing these days because of work, but we think she got a real keeper with this heifer.
