    Successful recipient cows?

I was told once by an ET tech that if recip fails 3 years in a row under normal circumstances that you should just move on and take them out of the recip program. I have had some take every single year and others that never took once, and everywhere in between.

    What would you do??

Sounds somewhat similar to one I posted about on here about 3 weeks...cow down in creek, and then could stand but not get up on her own. Ate, drank, got along good for 3 days then went downhill in a hurry. Vet came out (at the advice of several SP folks) and she had pregnancy toxemia. Did a...

    vaccinating

What are you vaccinating? Fall calves on cows, weaned calves, open cows, etc? That would help in determining what you need. What about pour-on? We usually do this at vaccinating time.

How much/often do you check your calving cows?

We keep our very close calving cows and heifers in a 2 acre paddock and check them about every 4 hours and occasionally at night if we think one is very close or a heifer is close. We are around to see almost all the calves born and sometimes intervene... I think just because we are watching so...

yearly poll...% bulls vs heifers in calf crop

I remember this was pretty interesting reading last year so will start it up for 2010. We have had 19 calves so far and only 5 of those are heifers! Frustrating! Most of these calves were AI and ET. Also we are seeing birthweights higher across the board, across all sires lines probably due...

At what point is just yelling uncle and giving up acceptable????

Hang in there!! This winter has been brutal and I think many are feeling the frustrations you are. When it rains, it pours, or should I say when it snows it blows!! We are hanging in there with our calving but seem to have many we have to mess with and bring in because of the long extended cold...

    Crazy Heifer!!!! Help

I think the water is a great idea, it is a good way to calm calves down and used to being touched at a safe distance. What is in the glu-coat?

Ditto on the z-tags. Have also used the Ritchey and they are good as well....always easy to read and numbers can't fade.

    Steer calf needing some weight...

Some calves are slow eaters and if he is in a group he may not be getting his fill before the grain is gone. You might try feeding him first and let him get his fill and then let the others back in. Same thing if he is smaller, they usually get the least to get and get pushed around. I agree on...

    UPDATE on down heifer

The cow died during the night. She never made any improvement after she started going downhill, even with delivering the calf. The calf, on the other hand, is doing well and is up and getting around. She has not figured out the sucking reflex yet but is trying to take a bottle, just can't get...

    UPDATE on down heifer

    UPDATE on down heifer

The vet was out and examined her...he felt she had pregnancy toxemia. Prepped her for a c-section and pulled out a live 54 pound heifer calf. Calf is breathing on its own and alert, probably about 3 weeks early. Cow was stitched up and given an IV of Cal-Dex and hopefully will be doing better...

help with down heifer heavy bred

Thanks for all the replies. We did call the vet and he will be here in an hour. At that point we will determine if a C-section is our best option. Palpation gives me the indication the calf is too young/small to survive but we will see what the vet says. I will keep you posted.

What's the best calving pen for the money?

Not sure the mfg but my dad bought one from a dealer at the Nebraska Classic a couple years ago. It is 3 pens with headgate, nursing area, all of the good stuff. Works real handy, easy to operate. My dad never got around to anchoring his down and it has twice flipped over into the windbreak...

help with down heifer heavy bred

I have a tough situation here and not sure what to do. Had a 3 year old get stuck in the mud of a creek and was there for several hours before we found her. Got her out but she cannot get up. If we lift her with a hiplift and the tractor, she can stand and actually walked around.  (this happened...

    Attitude of first calvers

In my experience those that you spend a lot of time around, they do quite well at calving, better than those that didn't really enjoy you being around them before calving. That being said, you can still NEVER trust a cow or heifer, no matter what. Another thing I have noticed is that if a cow...

    Tagging Cattle

All of our cows have 3 digit numbers that represent their unique 2digits number and the year they were born in front of it.  817 was born in 2008. Then when 817 calves in 2010, her calf would have a 4 digit number in 2 rows on the tag. On the top, it would 8, saying her mother was 817. The...

    Who's got Wrestlers out there?

Just wondering how many wrestlers parents are out there? I have two boys and they both love wrestling. One is 6&Under 58 and the other is 8&Under 52. This is our 2nd year and it is really fun and wrestling is pretty big in Kansas I would say.  My oldest wants to try and qualify for state this...
