    signs of hardware disease?

We have never had to treat one for hardware...what are the symptoms? Haven't been able to check the cows for a good week with all the rain and mud and yesterday noticed one cow had lost a lot of weight in a short amount of time. She is going on 11 years old but has been fine all summer. Looked...

    feeding field peas

Do any of you use field peas in your ration? If so, is there a limit on what percentage of the ration it can be? My cousin is growing them and wanted us to try them as literature says they are an excellent source of protein and great mixed in a ration. So, we gradually have switched our feeder...

    product to make hair "pop"

I need some advice from my fellow planteers....I have been using at home a concoction of zoom bloom/kleen sheen/infusium 23 and vinegar and I like the way the hair is training and it is shiny and conditioned. However, it is not good for clipping, the hair is too heavy and doesn't give that pop I...

    Safety reminders.

Something that came up with my son at our county fair that we have not covered or experienced --  What to do when someone else's calf gets loose in the showring.  I'm glad he was too interested in what he was doing to freak out!

    wean ration

I was just curious to know what you all use for your first ration to give calves at weaning. We offer cane hay and oat hay and the grain is a mixture of cracked corn, oats, soybean meal, a pellet (with rumensin) and molassess to cut the dust. They seem to love  but am not sure it is the best for...

What type of knife do you use to castrate 5-6 month old bull calves?

Does everyone give a penicillin shot when castrating calves at weaning age or older? We have banded for years and this year tried banding plus using the newberry knife to slit the sack to see if things sped up. It did dry up quicker but still took a good 3 weeks to fall.

    ? about weaning

I think a lot of things factor in to when people wean. For us, it depends on the grass situation, when we put up our silage and our schedule! In a perfect world, we wean at about 6 months. We don't show much and this is when we have the best time of year for weaning. However, in drought years we...
