Am I Getting Old...Love No Fit Shows

I only go to breed shows and we don't have a "no-fit"option at this point, but we would certainly like it. In my case, I show cattle to market them, not just to show so I am self taught at clipping and fitting and am at a real disadvantage to those who can fit well. I think it is an art and I...

    Flushing: Conclusion and Advice needed

The place you had the cows flushed, have you used them before and had good luck or was this the first time you had used them. Am wondering if there was an issue with procedure used in flushing and/or freezing. Sorry for your bad luck. What a bummer.

    Halter Breaking

I think it will alll just depend on the calf and how they handle the whole process. I would go with the tie up and lead to water and feed route as it may get her broke faster and get her to think of you as someone that she likes and trusts.  I have seen numerous people bring very very green...

When do you cut your bulls?

We do ours in groups. The obvious culls get banded or cut at weaning, the rest have some time on test before we make further cuts. We have done both castration and banding at ages up to a year and have had good and bad experiences with both but prefer banding. We don't castrate anything until...

    Heat Detectors?

We used the tail paint you put on with a gun and it worked better and was more obvious if the cow was in heat or just got ridden a couple times. We won't go back to the stick on type patches.

    Just look.......green grass everywhere!!!!

Here in NW Kansas, after having the dries winter in recorded history, we have had a wet late spring and early summer. It has caused havoc with the spring planting and wheat harvest but the pastures look wonderful and the cattle are happy. I wish we could distribute the rainfall more evenly so...

    Bloating

You might also try a sprinkle of baking soda  in the grain. We have used that in bulk on feeder calves when we started having bloat issues. Fixed the problem. There is a also a product called TheraBloat that your vet may carry. I don't know anything about it. Good luck.

Most Hated Job On The Farm...

I almost forgot one of my all time favorites....trying to control prairie dogs. It doesn't matter how much shooting or poisoning or baiting we do, they keep coming right back over from our neighbors across the fence. ARGH!!!

Do you think it on legs with real short hair? That kind of hair seems nearly untrainable.

Most Hated Job On The Farm...

I really hate cleaning out grain bins and it seems I am now the "best" at it!! Ha. The other thing I hate is when a familly member goes on vacation and their cows get out while they are gone! It happens to me on a regular basis. I also hate setting up everything to work cattle in a pasture...

    calf with swollen naval

Thanks for the replies. We got him in last night and gave him some penicillin so we will see what happens. It was not hard down at the naval, a little higher up. I think my hubby poked it with a needle to see if anything would come out and none did. Hopefully he will improve, doesn't seem to...

    triticale

Hey AJ, Where are you at? I'm at Hill City! There are some people around here that do tricale all the time. I think they plant it in August or very early September and have cows on it until May! And it is dryland.

    calf with swollen naval

We have a month old bull calf that looks like his naval is swelled. So, we caught him and the issue is with the naval. It has a hard area about the size of a ping pong ball  (all inside) and a little tissue exposed on the end that looks like an "outie" belly button. Is this a herneated naval? We...

    What to breed to

Are you wanting to stay clubby/show cattle type? Braunvieh are a great, great maternal breed and are moderate with muscle, milk and carcass traits. If you like the bull on my avatar, let me know!

    Best electric dehorner

We do a considerable amount of dehorning each year and this is the dehorner we have: http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=8dbadefe-2bf0-45b1-a722-1166a5cef4d5 It will only work on calves to about 4 months and it seems to do a good job for us. We learned after the first year to leave it...
