    Finally - AI certified!

All true... Congrats. And yes...It IS easier on a "real" cow. A heifer's cervix is typically pretty small compared to a cow, but it can sometimes be easier to get into and navigate because it doesn't have as many nooks and crannies. They're usually about the diameter of your finger where a cow's...

First Calf Heifers Calves as Replacements

I tend to think along the lines of the earlier posts... The calves out of your first-calf-heifers are the most current genetics and should be at the top of the list genetically. We don't use throw away bulls on heifers...if she can't have a respectable calf as a two-year-old, then she doesn't...

    Simmental coat patterns

Many of the American Simmental breeders started out by AI breeding cattle of other breeds and building up to a purebred status, so if we're talking about purebreds as opposed to fullbloods, I'm not sure how fair this assumption is that breeders have given up their breed for black hides. Consider...

    AI question

If you time bred her yesterday and then she was in standing heat last night, I would probably breed her again this morning just to be safe. I don't do a lot of time breeding, and the only ones I have done were cows or heifers that never showed a good heat at all. I'd rather get her bred than be...

    AI question

If you know she was standing before midnight last night, you should be good. If you bred her today based on a hunch that she may have been in and you never actually saw her in standing heat, than it sounds like you may have been early. In that case, I'd probably breed her again early tomorrow...

    Recip Question

I'd be a little leery of open cows with weaning aged calves unless you know why they're open and it has nothing to do with fertility or unless your plan is find them before breeding season and speak for em on the terms they're left open for fall breeding. There might be people, though, who'll ...

    Face swirls......

Same here...I've heard about it, and I notice it on occasion, but I've never thought to really pay close attention. If you can't get close enough to see the swirl on the nose, I think that means it doesn't matter whether it's above or below the eyes! Lol

Week old calf bucked over at knees

Was this calf bucked over at birth?... Or has this happened since then? I don't think this sounds like navel ill at all. If it's tendons like was being discussed, it has nothing to do with structure, either.

Week old calf bucked over at knees

Yep...what JTM said. Give him a little time...he oughta straighten up. Time, exercise, and weight are the formula. As he gets heavier and exercises more, it should help stretch his tendons & his legs will straighten up.

    What to do?

I have one experience with inducing, and it went HORRIBLY wrong. It wasn't my cow, and I had nothing to do with the decision to induce her, but I happened to be there during the labor, and for me, it will forever serve as a very good reason to be patient and wait for them to do their thing...

    Bull help

I would second the nomination for a Simmental bull on those kind of cows. I think that'd be a nice blend of genetics to make decent steers and even better heifers. If you really wanna focus on the steer thing, you would probably wanna be pretty particular about the front end on any bull you...

    Some new Simmy faces

I don't yet. I bought him last fall at zaGibbs in Alabama, and he went out with cows pretty soon after we got him home. He ran with cows all winter and changed herds March 10, and he'll clean up a small group of early spring calvers. I plan to get some good pictures of him later in the summer...

    Repeat/Booster Shots On Your 7 & 8 way Vaccinations?

We all need to look at what we're doing occasionally and consider how we can do a better job. We use Alpha 7 for a clostridium as calves, and it doesn't require a booster. You do get some injection site abscesses if you're not real careful (and even if you are careful) because of the adjuvant...

    Some new Simmy faces

Lol well, I'm done til September. And I think I'm set on those calves... We'll see. Got a bunch of Tux N Tails (by Shear Pleasure) and several Bold Futures...hopefully!...

    Some new Simmy faces

That's kinda weird...it seemed like we couldn't make a baldy last year no matter what we used! Almost every calf was solid black. This year, we got blazes on pretty much every calf that could have had a blaze! It's funny how that works... Looking forward to this fall... I have a bunch bred to a...

    Repeat/Booster Shots On Your 7 & 8 way Vaccinations?

Here's the deal... If you're not boosting the first shot, then the annual "booster" you're giving is not a booster because there's nothing left to "boost" by the time you give the next shot. The manufacturer doesn't suggest a 2nd shot just to sell more vaccine, and I've never read a label that...

    Happy Easter

Well, I like the quote, and I'm sure it probably has some merit somewhere. I can't agree, though, if he's saying calves born before Easter won't grow until then. I like my calves early... Easter is practically summer calving, and I don't have much use for summer calves.

New red Simm Bull CDI Rimrock 325Z

Oh really?... That's interesting. Good to know. Not that I was thinking about using any red bulls any time soon. But I like to know that kind of stuff. From the dam's side, I'm guessing? 701T isn't a spotter, is he?

New red Simm Bull CDI Rimrock 325Z

Actually, there are plenty of Simmental nowadays that happen to be extremely each calving. Some of those aren't the same bulls that are in the top of the breed for growth, but I think there are enough breeders who focus on that spread from birth to yearling that you can find bulls that will live...
