Im wanting a group of recips to put fall embryos in would like to buy them open after spring calves have been pulled off. Does anyone know where a guy could find a group of good open cows this summer?

My buddy makes friends with the local salebarn owner and when he hears of a group of cows that is either odd age pairs or someones bull went bad and they have open cows he tries to get them. He likes buying the odd age pairs because they are cheaper and selling the calves can pay for a portion of buying the recips. He then has the time to make sure they are on his shot protocol and ready to go. Just an idea.

I'd be a little leery of open cows with weaning aged calves unless you know why they're open and it has nothing to do with fertility or unless your plan is find them before breeding season and speak for em on the terms they're left open for fall breeding. There might be people, though, who'll  have some late calving or summer pairs with cows left open for fall. Probably depends on where you're located...some areas typically calve more cows in the fall than other areas. But there again, late calvers in a spring breeding program could be the cows that don't keep up on calving intervals, and if I'm spending the money and going to the trouble, I want the most fertile and most productive recip prospects I can get my hands on.

Just kinda thinking out loud... Good luck finding something!

I think that there will be plenty of cheap ish pairs at sale barns this late spring or summer.....  Cows get cheap if they haven't calves by the time field work starts a lot of times.....  Might be able to pick up cows that are due to calve in late may or June.....  We have been buying odd cows this spring with hopes that they will make good donors.  So far all four we bought were odd cows off of loads that guys were just out of hay, they calves early and we hope to put eggs in com mid may.
